MIDI jitter

Post by pdemand »

I don't know if there's already a name for this phenomenon so you'll have to excuse the subject...
I have a Moog EP-3 expression pedal plugged into my Midi Expression IO, and with my foot off the pedal it's occasionally sending jittery data to my interface. I can see the MIDI input light on my interface glowing solid green as if it was getting continuous CC changes. And in this particular case, I have the pedal assigned to volume in a particular program I'm using, and you can see the volume level go quickly back and forth between adjacent values. 56 to 57 rapidly back and forth for example. Can anything be done on the MIDI expression side of the matter before I start looking at the pedal itself? In case it matters, I'm using a MIDI cable to go into my interface, and I'm powering the Midi Expression IO with a USB-B to USB-C cable plugged into a USB-C 25w phone charger brick.

Turn down the sensitivity control. The default value of 75 should be good. Also, as pedals age, the potentiometers inside them tend to build up oxidation--especially if you live in a humid climate. If turning down the sensitivity doesn't work, you might want to consider doing some maintenance on the potentiometer.
