USB vs MIDI on Expression IO

I just purchased the MIDI Expression IO and it's being shipped. Looking forward to using it. I have not ever used an Audiofront product before.

Mac user here, and my entire rig is generally used with MainStage and other software products like it. I'll be hooking up to the IO 2 Boss FS-5U switches for patch changes, and an expression pedal. My question is this: Can I setup the IO to use the MIDI-out port alone, or is it necessary to use USB? I don't have an unlimited number of USB ports, and I'm hoping I can use all 3 of these pedals in my MIDI chain.

You don't need a usb connection, but it will need power, either via the 9v connector or a USB charger.
