false rim shots at very low velocity

Post by gkurtenbach »

I've got my Roland PD-125 snare working with the ED10 really well. However, there is one small thing that I can't seem to tune away. When I drop the drum stick on the snare head and let it bounce until it dies out, sometimes right at the last few bounces, the ED10 switches to a rim shot. So my nice snare buzz has a quiet little "clunk" of a rimshot as it fades out.

I tried raising the threshold but that doesn't make it go away completely and then I start losing the last few very quiet bounces.

Any ideas on fixes?

Much appreciated!

Adjust the rimshot range control and seem if that fixes it.

Tried making the rimshot threshold higher but then it's too high for stronger hits--the quiet rimshots are about 1/3 to the right in the rimshot range control. Setting it beyond that makes it too hard to get rimshots.

Another workaround was to change the side stick note assignment to be the snare head note/sound and pulled up the SS range just a little so those wrong hits are in the SS range. I then had to reduce the X-stick gain to 1 to keep the hits from being too loud. Of course, now a SS hit is unavailable.

Seems as the bouncing stick dies out maybe the rim sensor gets stronger than the head sensor? I can imagine stick bounce as it dies out becomes pretty chaotic.

I think I know what could be causing the issue and I have a couple ideas as to how I might implement a fix, but you're going to have to wait until the next version is in BETA to test the fix. In the meantime, you might find that the issue goes away if you try another input.

Hi Rob, hi gkurtenbach,

I had and sometimes still have that issue on my snare.
But I can minimize that with an adjustment of the head and rim-piezo sensitivity (remember the 2 trimpots)
and by tweaking the rimshot range control.

Hi mprinz,

I don't have any trim pots on my snare pad. Is that what you mean?

Hi Rob,

Would be great if you could find a fix.

Thanks!

I just want to mention that this issue might be due to the lag of head/rim sensitivity adjustement possibilities.

In the early days the eDrumIn provided seperate pad gain controls. Rob pointed out that the rimshot range control
contains these adjustments. Somehow.

It's actually probably related to small discrepancies between resistance of resistors used in the input stage. That's why I suggested trying another input. In the next version I'll either add either add a function to calibrate away those discrepancies or more simply always bias the rim sensor a small amount amount lower than the head sensor.

Can I use the same preset when I switch to a new input or must I start fresh?

Of course save a preset and use that.
