If using edrumin in live playing and usb gets disconnected...have to restart daw?

I'm slowly learning my way around this. I'm trying out various pads. Sometimes I'll have to switch inputs on edrumin so I'll turn it off. Or maybe the usb plug gets disconnected. Even though the DAW is still running and I hear the USB go back online I get no more sounds from the vst's unless (in my case) I restart Reaper. Is this normal or is there a way to avoid having to do this? Thanks.
I just tested this with stand alone Addictive Drums demo I have and the same thing. I'm trying to figure out how risky it would be to depend on a PC in a live playing setting. Also just tested it with Battery 3. I turned off the usb and back on and could continue playing without restarting.

That's normal behavior in Windows. I know Ableton gets around this issue, but I'm not sure which other hosts do. When I'm developing, I typically use Ableton for this reason as it allows me to update the firmware without needing to restart.

I can confirm that Cantabile Supports hotplugging MIDI devices as well.

I know you can't just unplug and plug again when using SD3 standalone.
It will lose connection and then you manually have to go into the menus to get it working again... sometimes it's faster just closing and reopening the app.

If I remember, Logic is the same.

Best idea would be to make a suitcase (or some kind of portable box) that holds your computer and the edrumin securely inside, just pop it open, plug in audio cables, but all connections between computer, eDrumin and audio interface do not need to be touched.

Appreciate the replies. I don't have Ableton or Cantibile but I guess I have to look into them. In a live situation I would need to keep the edrumin nearby so it couldn't go in a briefcase. Just trying to evaluate the risks of the good sounds from VST's vs the dependability (but limitations) of a dedicated module. Still haven't bought a stand alone drum software so if there one that's hot pluggable that's good to know. Maybe it's better to go through a DAW as you could combine several VST's? Although I'm not sure of you risk latency problems with running several VST's at once in a live situation? Thanks

This got me checking out these things and am trying out Gig Performer 3 (it was cheaper and hopefully seems OK for my limited needs). It allowed unplugging the Edrumin's USB and back in and the sound continued.
