It really is strange behavior; I can understand being at a loss.

I have been able to force XP to reinstall by first uninstalling the driver using USBDview, but that by itself made no difference. But maybe the new firmware will make a difference.

I'll give the beta firmware a shot, assuming there's a way to revert if things go badly. What do you mean about "color"? Is there something significant about the color of the housing other than looks?

Each color uses a slightly different product ID,such that they can have different midi port names. Perhaps that would remedy any possible conflict. The Beta firmware uses a different usage page which could also help out. TRy installing the firmware for a different color first and see if that helps. If it doesn't, I'll give you access to the beta firmware which is very stable.
