Xstick muting snare when triggered

Post by Jallsworth »

I am using SD3 and when I do a rimshot, the xstick is triggered which isn't too bad, but it mutes the sustain of the snare. I have the xstick dial at zero, thinking it would help in some way but no dice. Please help.

Can you attach a screenshot of your settings for the snare?

This is my same issue i mentioned with the BT1 on the latest beta release. Whenever a rimshot or hit is triggered, and a SS is triggered as well (in my case with the BT1 it is cross talk) the sustain for rimshot or hit is muted very strangely. I first noticed in EZD2 and then I have now upgraded to SD3 and the issue remains.

I understand the reason for the crosstalk, but it’s the sustain that I’m wondering about.
TD-17KVX, PD-125BK snare, PDX-100 Tom, PDX-12 Toms, PDX-8 Toms, CY-5 splash, CY-15R ride, CY-13R China. eDRUMin 10 with TD-17 slave module. MacBook Pro (16gb RAM and 1TB SSD). SSD5.5 and EZD2. Abelton Live.

A quick fix for now is setting the side stick sound to a snare edge sound. The snare edge sound does not mute the sustain of the snare when triggered which leads me to believe that it may be a problem on the side of superior drummer.

One way to determine what's going on in SD3 is to also assign a MIDI keyboard to trigger notes in SD3 at the same time as your kit. Using the MIDI keyboard, I found that the snare zones, rimshot and xstick do seem to interact by mixing or canceling one another in various ways, but then again, I usually don't play them all together at the same time on the kit.
On the PD-125 I have basically tweaked the eDRUMin Rimshot Range so the the xstick doesn't trigger via the PD-125 rim, and instead triggers on the side mounted BT-1. So the rim is dedicated to the rim shot.
And still, playing the kit snare, there are some muted tail types of cancellation from time to time but the three articulations seem to 'generally' work separately. It's workable for me but before the BT-1 got involved, I was definitely much less happy.
I am also using zone triggering as note 6, with cc16, (on the eDRUMin) and to test the three articulations: center (note 38), off center and edge via the MIDI keyboard, I just hit the snare on one of those zones, then play note center (38) on the keyboard and it will switch to follow the zones according to how I hit the snare. This way you can play the off center and edge (I have them assigned as note 33 and 125) at the same time on the keyboard as the rim shot (40) and side stick (37), because they are all within a few notes of one another physically.

Edit/add: one other thought was to create another instance of SD3 in the AU/XST host for just the articulations that are problematic, but assign them to a different MIDI channel. Enable and disable the articulations in both SD3 instances as necessary to test out, isolate/troubleshoot.
Also, I set up a small Korg MIDI controller keyboard next to my kit. It's difficult to squeeze more ergonomically accessible hardware in, but it's handy for troubleshooting and mapping, as well as composition and exercise, like playing against quickly created and sequenced bass line ostinatos.

Thank you for the detailed guide! I'll dive in and troubleshoot when I get the chance. :D

I did notice more recently that simultaneous hits of certain combos of triggers would cancel one out. The hihat would cancel the snare and more recently, the bass drum would be canceled by the snare. I moved a couple inputs around and it fixed both the trigger cancellation and the xstick choke. I have a feeling I'll find another quirk after this change though.

Your problem is likely that the xtalk controls are set too high. Those controls are responsible for cancelling out unwanted triggers. Set incorrectly, they will also cancel out intentional triggers.
