Roland HH Controller on Yamaha Module?

Post by DanielSamson »

Hi!
This question is not exactly related to Edrumin and is very specific, but I know here are many people who know much more about E-drums than I do so maybe someone can help me...

Has anyone found a way to use a continuous Hi Hat Controller like the Roland FD-7 to FD-9, VH-10 to VH-13 or the Goedrum Controller on a Yamaha Module?
I am using a Yamaha DTX Multi 12, sometimes in combination with Edrumin and sometimes without, triggering SD3.
When I'm using it without Edrumin it seems to be limited to Yamaha Hi Hat Controllers, as Roland uses different wiring and resistance (I believe?)

I tried plugging an FD-7 into the HH Ctrl on the DTX M-12 using a TRS cable without success. Read somewhere, that if you don't plug it all the way in it works, but it doesn't and wouldn't be a good enough solution if it did.

Now my idea is to use the "Foot Sw" input on the DTX M-12 with an expression or continuous sustain pedal to control CC4 MIDI messages. While this may work to send continuous CC4 to SD3 it sucks to play Hi Hat on a sustain or expression pedal..

So...
1.: Is there any way to use a Roland HH Controller with a Yamaha Module (i.e. using an adapter)?
2.: Is there any way to modify a Roland HH Controller to act as an expression pedal so I can plug it into the Foot Sw of the DTX M-12? (or is this idea complete nonsense  )

Thank you,
Daniel

Yamaha HH jack provides 3.3v (I think) on the tip, and expects to read a voltage between 0 and 3.3v on the ring. I suspect you can indeed make it work, but the module might still have troubles as it expects the voltage to change in discreet steps. Not exactly the info you are looking for, but should help.

Thank you Rob,
this could be helpful, but I don't yet know how to proceed..
Can you please explain what the difference between a Roland HH Controller and a Yamaha HH Controller is in terms of TRS connection and electricity?
Does Edrumin work with both Yamaha and Roland HH Controllers?

eDRUMin works with both, but the Roland method is way better than Yamaha's stepped approach. Check the pedal wiring diagrams in the appendix of the manual.

I've never attempted to make an adapter, bit I'm sure someone here has. Perceval probably knows...

Thanks again!

In the appendix i found these two circuits:

Is the left one the Roland and the right one the Yamaha?
I was thinking both brands use FSR..
If so, what's the difference between the Roland and Yamaha HH Controllers that makes them incompatible?

I think you're wasting your time. It's not as trivial as you think. If you have an eDRUMin, use it. Plug the eDRUMin MIDI out into your Yamaha module. Problem solved.

Well, I guess you are right.. At first I couldn't believe that there is no simple way to send continuous HH Ctrl to a Yamaha Module, but it seems to be the case.. I'll get an Edrumin 10 soon in addition to my Edrumin 4 (for which I paid 40$ import tax to Austria). Is there a chance that in the near future Edrumin will be available somewhere in Europe (like Drum-Tec)?

Not until I can produce devices in sufficient quantities. There just aren't enough chips to go around right now. The current batch of ED10 will like last another couple of months and then I won't have more until October.

Sorry, I just noticed this thread.

Here is a circuit to use when using a FSR based HH controller, as Roland does.

Myself, I just bought a FSR pad for $15 and placed it under my HH pedal with a wood platform and some foam.

You can view the circuit here on VDrums:

Hope it helps.
