3 zone Lemon cymbal with only 1 input

Hi guys,

has anyone tried to reconfigure a Lemon cymbal to a Yamaha style 3 zone pad using a 10kohms resistor?
I am asking because I ordered a few and it would be great to use all the zones, but ... I just have only 1 input left for the bell switch of the ride.
And here, I am at work right now, and I get the idea ....hmmm ... nope..... If I have to open it up anyway to switch the zones, what about soldering a 10k resistor into the bell switch circuit and wire it to the first TRS input.

That should work fine.

Alesis/Medeli are also using the 10k method, I guess.
I mean, It's a common technique to mark different locations of a switch.

Interestingly, the resistance o the bell Switch on my 18" Lemon Ride varies from 30 ohms to 90 ohm and on the edge from 36 ohms to 180 ohms. It might be possible to detect where on the bell the pad is hit.

yes, that's what I measure too.

I doubt I would be able to reliably get any positional information from the switch, but you should be able to make an adapter of sorts to get is working with the Yamaha preset. I have some time today so I might make one of those adapters for myself.

what did you do? You left the cymbal alone and soldered a 2x TRS to single TRS? of course together with the resistor.

So, why is Roland using two connections.
I thought of like, it maybe more reliable than an PCB with resistor...
I don't know. At least with the Yamaha technique you could get dozens of zones on one input...

Edit: Ahh, nay, you need to know from which pad the piezo signal is coming.

I just got my eDRUMin 10 (thanks, Rob!) and also ordered some Lemon cymbals and was thinking about doing the same trick to only use 1 input instead of 2.

Rob, if I read you correctly, by doing this, we kill any chances of positional sensing for the cymbals? (was that even supported for the Lemon cymbals in the first place?).

no, there is no cymbal with a fine pos sense feature.
Only edge, bow, bell.

I think he was brooding about what may be possible if the resistance was reproducible.
But therefore, I think one would need real, expensive softpots.

I don't think positional sensing is possible with the Lemon cymbals, but even if it was possible, the 10K resistor trick would not affect positional sensing data. I don't think positional sensing with the Lemon cymbals is possible, but I have a pretty good idea how to do it for Roland VH-12 -> VH-15, I just don't have any room left on the UI!
