Did you think of some DIY tubes?

Since I got some practice now, I would stick some piezos onto some gray drainpipes.

I also have here those lying around:

I took apart the two 6" Dauz pads I kept from the 90's. I had never looked inside one before. The construction is kind of odd and explains why the playing surface is very hard. When you remove the cap nuts that hold the back on you see (in the case of the 6" pads) three threaded rods surrounded by springs. The threaded rods (bolts) are attached to a metal disc that is the diameter of the pad. The disc is enclosed in the rubber surface material which is about 1/3" thick. in the center there is a 27mm cylindrical opening down to the metal disc. This is where the piezo is attached to the metal disc with rubber cement.

The mono 1/4 jack has a red wire soldered to the tip which then runs to the center of the piezo. The black wire soldered to the sleeve goes to the outer ring of the piezo. I couldn't see anything wrong with the connections but when I tugged slightly on the red wire it separated from the piezo. I tried soldering it back on but it still didn't work. I redid the other connections but still no reaction from strikes to the pad. I decided the piezo was bad so I removed it.

I never loved the playing surface, I thought it was too hard and bouncy but the pads did trigger reliably with the Alesis D4 I used at the time.

I'm going to order a pack of goedrums 27mm pre-wired piezos and see that solves the problem.

Ok, bought some 27mm pre-wired piezos, soldered them to the original jack - used 3M clear 1mm two sided tape to fasten piezo to metal plate and I'm back in business with the Dauz Pads.

My next thing to figure out is how to mount the pair of them somewhere. The mounting method for them is to loosen two drum keyed bolts on the bottom and slide a 1/2" to 1" diameter shaft between a pair of 2 inch diameter rubber discs that have a vee shaped indent for the shaft. The pads are pretty heavy for their size so I think they might need their own stand.

Thinking of using this mounted either on one of the tom mount tubes or off a cymbal stand:

Hmm, that looks like a pretty handy piece of hardware.
I'm currently using one of these but ball joints are a lot more versatile.

I bought a BT1 for use as a side stick pad mounted to snare (think ATV or EF Note) Works great, plays great, and I’m very happy with the purchase. The improvements Rob’s made in SW 1.5 beta makes BT-1 and eDRUMin from good integration to excellent.

I was looking for another effects type pad to add to my maxed out MDS-C rack (I got an ED4 for a birthday present this month I wanted to fill up the inputs) and I was thinking about another BT-1. But the cost of even a used BT-1 with the mounting hardware I needed for my rack, I found that used CY-5 HH kit was less expensive. Plus a cy5 is dual zone…. So I got a used CY-5 HH kit and will attach that between my actual HH (on a stand) and Crash 1.

I've got a saved ebay search for used BT-1's. Might buy if the price is in $50-60 range. In the meantime, my repaired Dauz pads are actually playing well for percussion. I bought them second hand but they were barely used. They've been sitting sealed in a ziplock bag for 15 years. I don't remember them not working but both needed piezo replacement. That's probably why they were not on my D4/Dauz kit when I donated it. They're easy to come by on ebay but some of them look pretty beat up.

I looked at that - it's a great price. If I could figure out a way to get the rod to be horizontal I would probably go with it.

EDIT - after writing the above I brainstormed and came up with an idea. The best way to mount the older Dauz pads is on a flat bar. I have some 1" x 1/8" thick plate steel with 1/2" holes every inch from Home Depot. If I buy a bolt and some locking nuts I could attach the plate steel to the HMC-1 and then attach it to my hi-hat stand - the pads would be in a good spot. The pads are mounted on springs - probably there won't be a cross talk issue.

New idea is to use HMC-1 attached to my left crash cymbal stand but use an L-Rod instead of a straight one.
