edrumin with mimic pro

Post by lalo »

So I had an idea today triggering SSD5.5 with my edrumin 4 and DDT snare regarding "Positional Sensing", since the Mimic pro and SSD5.5 share essentially the same midi structure I see that for the Snare there are 6 articulations:

1- Snare Center
2- Snare Rimshot
3- Snare Sidestick
4- Snare Rimclick
5- Snare Rimshot Edge (shallow rimshot)
6- Snare Side ("light ps")

Since the edrumin can send a separate edge note for positional sensing, I can have a "light" positional sensing feature on SSD5.5 and the Mimic Pro. I can assign the PS note to the "Snare Side articulation". I tried this and works perfectly on my setup. So if you want to pair the sounds of the mimic with the power of the edrumin you won't be dissapointed, especially since the edrumin hihat engine could improve the mimic hihat as well.
Here is a short video showing the light PS, by light I mean the edrumin sends only 1 edge note, as opposed to sending CC with SD3 which sends center, off center and edge notes.

Sounds good

Edrumin could have a feature to mix two notes when off center is played.
If mixing a center sound with an edge sound could give a decent off center sound, Edrumin could "easily" send one center note and one edge note at the same time.
If center is played, edge note velocity = 0
If off center is played edge note vel = center note vel
if edge note is played, center note velocity = 0

In between articulation could be achieved as well.

But, honestly I'm really not sure it could sound good... It maybe deserves a test, if the samples insinde the Mimic are very well cut, it could sound good.
I'm not sure how SD3 trigger their snare sounds. Do they really have off center samples ? Do they use 3 positions only ? Don't they mix two sounds to create an artifact of continuous sound variation ? Don't know.
Giving full PS to mimic owners, that could be intersting.

I don't know how SD3 works out the 3 zones and if there's off-center samples but that's what I get with the edrumin4, Midi CC 16 with transition from center to off center to edge sounds. The Mimic Pro doesn't have off-center samples anyway, only center and edge, so at the moment it works fine with only these 2 zones for PS. The only other option is a roland module with their PS but we all know how that sounds...I'm talking about triggering an edrumin with midi out to a module and trigger the internal sounds, not to a computer.

Me too.
But you know that's not for me, I'm not a Mimic user. That's just an idea

Yeah, I wan't referring to you directly but in general, lot of mimic people could use the edrumin to have PS now, but I don't work for pearl nor I own a mimic so in the end is just an idea for using PS with SSD5.5

I will append that info when I receive it.

well the mistery is solved, I got a pretty good deal on a mimic so I could test this and here are my findings:
You can assign 5 zones to any of the 8 virtual midi pads of the mimic, so if you connect your edrumin via midi you can trigger center, side, rimshot and cross stick articulations. Strangely, the regular snare input doesn't allow more than 3 zones. So there you go, you can get a light positional sensing out of the mimic pro.

Valuable info here. I didn't realize there was so much good information in this thread. I'll make a mimic drum map.

cool, here is the Virtual Midi Pad tab with 5 zones assignable, as I said I'm sending Center, Side, Rimshot and Cross-Stick to the Mimic, I'm going to get a BT-1 so I can get separate Side-stick and rim click on an aux input.
