Rimshot and rim settings

I have to ask again:

I am quite curious here ...
I have four models of pads,
the cheap Millenium 10" plastic, the Jobeky 14", the DIY 14" Snare and the 14" ddt MS 140, and the ATV 13" Snare pad.
And - really - only with the Millenium thing .. I got no false triggers with regards to x-stick or rim shot.
Those pads seemed to be well designed.

Rob, do you think that two potentiometers would solve most of these issues?
Apart from construction defects.

I messed around with trim pots and I also stuck another piezo right on the outer shell,
and that was just "moving" white marker more to the left side, or to the right, when changing the ration of head/rim input.

My problem "was" that I got X-stick trigger if I did subtle strokes on the edge or also in the center.

Now I raised the threshold from 0.6 to 0.9 and those annoying sounds are gone... but is that the way to go or did I miss anything?
And sure, the subtle, barely touching buzz roll hits are not detected...
But I guess that's the price when switching from a 12" to a 14"

The device needs to be able to differentiate between noise and a real hit on the head and a real hit on the rim. The lower you pull that thresh control down into the noise floor, the more difficult it is to accurately make that distinction.

ok, since 0.9 is not way to high, I am ok with that.

I took that Roland PD-120 preset by monospace and checked his setting.
He set the thresh to 1.0.

What is the common noise floor level?

I will check if those hits are really near to the noise level...

And I will try different power supplies.

There’s no one answer for that. It depends on the type of trigger, the quality of the wiring and cables, and even between the ED4 and the ED10 there’s a difference due to internal circuitry. With my bog standard Roland pads for example, on my ED4 I can go as low as 0.5, the ED10 is usually a tad higher, like 0.8 or so. Just do what you’re doing: move the slider as low as you can without hearing unwanted triggering, then leave it alone.

If you then tweak the velocity curve to be a nice logarithmic figure, you should have no problem playing soft buzz rolls.
