Does not appear as a MIDI device -- ??

Post by gnormhurst »

I plugged in MIDI Expression to the USB (Dell XP SP3). As the plug and play driver installed and I saw messages like "MIDI Expression Orange". I plugged in an expression pedal.

I opened MIDI-OX, but it saw no inputs (MIDI sources). Same with Transmidifier. Same with VSTHost.

I tried other USB ports. The driver installed on those, too. I took note of the messages as it installed ("MIDI Expression Orange,", etc). Tried MIDI-OX and Transmidifier again -- nothing.

I downloaded and installed MIDI Expression Control. It does see MIDI Expression. As I move the expression pedal, the graphic pedal follows. But it does not appear as a MIDI device to MIDI programs.

I expected the device to appear as a MIDI source device.

What am I missing? Is this not the product I thought it was?

It should definitely appear as a MIDI Device. What OS are you using?

Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3. Dell D620 laptop.

For example: when I start MIDI-OX , it throws up an alert: "There are no MIDI Input devices."

I will try it on another machine to see what happens.

I tried it on another laptop (Dell Mini) and it works: MIDI-OX sees it and shows the CC values as I rock the pedal. But I need it to work on the D620.

Is it possible that of the various USB MIDI devices I have installed on the D620, that all ports have been "claimed" (registered) as belonging to those devices and are blocking MIDI Expression from being seen? This thought arises as I remember installing a driver for the Behringer UCA202 and the installer warning me that it would only be associated with that one port, and moreover it would block other USB Audio devices from ever using that port. Could something like that be at work?

I got the USBDview.exe utility and dumped the USB info for MIDI expression devices on both the Dell Mini (which works) and the Dell D620 (which doesn't. But needs to.) In each case, the device was connected to the machine.

(I could do a full dump like this of all devices, which might reveal something about conflicts(?) but it's a lot.)

I don't know how to interpret much of this, but I'm hoping you do. Let me know if this contains anything you would see as odd. Otherwise I'm not sure how to proceed or what to try. /Norm

Most interestingly, it says it's not connected.

Have a look in the Control Panel. Go to the Device Manager and under 'Sound, video and game controllers, look to see if MIDI Expression is listed there.

Oh... I see that one of them IS connected. The multiple copies is probably because you've plugged it into more than one USB port and has saved multiple copies of the driver. This would be normal I suspect.

Yes, USB confuses me because it seems to be implemented in layers, with each layer being shown as a "device." USBDview seems to show only one of this set of "devices" as connected. USBDview does not explicitly show any relationship among the set of devices.

I used USBDview to "uninstall" ALL USB drivers on the D620; this made no difference.

I plugged in my Axiom61, ran MIDI-OX (which found it), hit some keys and MIDI-OX showed data being generated.

So there's something about this particular system and MIDI Expression that keeps MIDI apps from seeing MIDI Expression. Short of reinstalling the OS, can you suggest anything else that I could try?

BTW, the reason I can't use it with the Dell Mini is that the Mini doesn't quite have the CPU power to run Transmidifier + loopMidi + VSThost/VB3 -- the audio crackles.

Thanks for your help, and thanks for this product -- it is much needed!

That's true, but does not account for all instances. I say this because I used USBDview to uninstall ALL drivers, then plugged in MIDI Expression into just one port, and multiple instances appeared, one labeled as "USB Audio" and another as "Unknown".

I'm really at a loss. I've never heard of an issue like this before. About the only thing I can think of is to give you access to a BETA version of the firmware that uses a different usage page. It'll be enough to force XP to re-install the driver. You might also try to use the firmware for a different color. I.E, when you update the firmware select 'green' or some other color.

If that doesn't work, you can return the device and I'll refund your money.

Rob
