ATV aD5 to USB Host Port not working

Post by MisterE »

Hi,

I'm looking to use my ATV aD5 as an input MIDI device into the eDRUMin 10 and then flow those data into my MacBook Air where I'm running SD3 and/or EZDrummer. I want MIDI data from the aD5 to merge inside the eDRUMin 10 and have both devices' MIDI data control SD3.

Per the manual (V1.3.1) , I should be able to connect any USB MIDI device into the eDRUMin's USB Host port, and all MIDI data should aggregate within the eDRUMin and flow via the USB MIDI connection to the MacBook Air into SD3. I am not able to get this to work, meaning when connected as such, only the MIDI data from the eDRUMin makes it to SD3, but not data from the aD5.

However, if I separately connect the aD5 via USB into one of my MacBook Air USB ports and separately connect the eDRUMin via USB to the MacBook Air, and then select both within SD3's Audio/MIDI Setup, both devices work as MIDI input devices into SD3. So I know the aD5 is outputting MIDI data, and it controls SD3 just fine on its own. I'm just not getting the eDRUMin to forward MIDI data from the aD5 onto the Mac.

I'm sure it's something simple, but i just can't seem to get this to work. Any thougths appreciated.

I’m doing something similar with a TD-17 module. It works, but I needed to update firmware to 1.4 BETA. On this forum there is a thread and the first post has the most up to date firmware. I recommend you download the latest version, which is currently 1.4.17. Pretty stable beta software and the USB HOST port works very well with my TD-17. Like you the firmware 1.3.whatever was not hosting my TD-17 correctly, but Rob fixed the issue in 1.4 beta.

Thanks for the reply. Per the manual for 1.3, it seems that the USB host support should support the aD5 with version 1.3, no?

So for example when I first setup the eDRUMin I could host my Alesis Strike Multipad just fine, but the TD-17 it could not. Rob looked at it and made some changes in 1.4 beta for USB protocol version something or another. Then it worked. My guess TD-17 and the ad5 are similar USB protocols.

Here is the important bit from Rob’s post on changes in 1.4 beta.

Changes in build 15
Fixed aftertouch not being sent to USB host port.
Fixed issues using a pedal to change banks of devices connected to USB host port.

Changes in build 12
Fixed as issue where pedal MIDI wasn't being sent to the host port when not connected to a computer.

Changes in build 10
Host port can now handle class compliant MIDI devices with descriptors as large as 1K (iConnectivity devices).
MIDI data from pedals is now forwarded to MIDI devices connected to the host port.

Changes in build 5
USB Host port now properly support USB2 MIDI devices.

Also if ATV modules are like Roland with a “vendor” or “generic” USB driver mode it needs to be in generic. Not sure if the ATV engineers did away with Roland vendor driver model and just made it class compliant.

Version 1.3 has issues with USB2 devices connected to the host port. It is fixed in version 1.4. That's almost certainly the problem you're experiencing.

Thanks! I'll give 1.4 a try.

Thanks, it's working very well with 1.4. The only issue I seem to be having is a re-routing of the MIDI out from eDRUMin to the aD5 and back, causing a sort of "phasing" sound but only with the hi hat, which is the only instrument that is directly into the eDRUMin inputs. I gave Rob that feedback on the 1.4 BETA thread.
