Got my second Edrumin, now tweaking. FD-9 VS VH-10... ?!

Post by Gemini8026 »

Hey all. Got my new 10 port unit today and hooked it into my setup. Everything is going smooth, and now just tweaking for best performance. It does take some time, but in the end I feel its pretty good.

The toughest thing about E-drums is always the Hi-hat. Its never perfect. Im triggering Superior 3 with a couple SDX packs and for the most part its performing great.

The one thing I have issues with are transmuting issues and weird transition on the hi hat. THE FD-9 is smooth, but it doesnt have the extra little "nudge" you can set up the VH-11 to do for getting those Tight articulations.

However last time I used a VH-11 when I hit the pad, my motion sensor would go down and affect the transmutes. Apparently Roland has made the VH-10 lighter, and with a good stand with a tension adjustable spring (My last stand never had one) it might be great. Curious to know if anybody has weird transmute problems on a VH-10 where they hit the pad, and the controller goes down with it affecting the sound?!?

Just curious as I am essentially aiming for the best Hi-hat performance and not afraid to replace my current FD-9 with a different solution.

Any thoughts?

Early firmware versions definitely had issues where hitting the hihat cymbal could cause the hihat pedal position to move, but in versions 1.2 and 1.3, several improvements were made to filter out that movement. By linking your hihat cymbal and hihat controller in the eDRUMin control application and enabling the 'Fast Stepping Fix', you'll find that the transmuting issues disappear, weather you are using an FD-9, VH-10/11, or VH-12/13.

Not sure what you mean by the controller "going down"? Do you mean physically? As in, it moves down on the stand? That should be an easy fix.

I have my VH-10 set up much like Rob ("Fast Stepping Fix" makes the foot chicks a little cleaner) using a run-of-the-mill Tama stand and am not experiencing any problems.

I am finally setting up my eDRUMin today so I can't yet answer from that perspective.

I can say this though. In my experience with other modules, the weight of the moveable hi hat cymbal (in my case the ATV 14", which is hefty, and a VH13) it has always been important to have a hi hat stand with a strong adjustable spring and set the upward force (spring tension) appropriately to balance out that weight and provide responsive upward motion. My previous hi hat stand just wasn't designed for a hefty cymbal, and when I hit the cymbal, that downward strike force would interrupt my intended positioning of the cymbal. Even if it didn't change the direction of that motion, it would interrupt the inertia enough to screw up my intended "openness" of the hi hat to alter my intended performance. When I switched to an Iron Cobra and dialed in the tension to my liking, all those issues went away.

To avoid the "interrupted inertia" problem, I used to be a firm believer that the best hi hat combination to ensure optimal pedal responsiveness was a two-piece solution (VH7 and CY5) - until I got the ATV 14" and then paired it with the Iron Cobra. I've tried many many configurations over the years and nothing matches this. The optical hi hat position sensor works flawlessly and should be trouble-free for years, unlike pressure sensors in the FD7 and FD8 which can wear out over time. I'm not sure whether the FD-9 is mechanical or a pressure sensor system.

My understanding of the VH10's design is that Roland made it intentionally lighter to overcome these issues. Or at least, if they didn't intend that, it's a very beneficial consequence. I would favor getting the VH-10 and a good stand over a two-piece solution.

Hope this helps.

I have a single Yamaha PCY135 on a low end Ludwig hi-hat stand using a neodymium magnet and Hall Effect sensor. When Rob rolled out the hi-hat improvements (Link to Pad, Fast Stepping etc) this setup started working as well as I could have hoped an edrum hi-hat could work.
