2 zones triggering and double hits

Post by mrantarctica »

Wondering if anyone can help me with this problem. Using Drone Triggers : Radial design with dual zone triggering both piezo's located centrally. This going into SD 3.0. Experiencing some annoying rim behaviour on my 14 and 16" toms and 14" snare, where the rim hits are quite hard to trigger, and sometimes when playing the rim hit, 2 notes are actually recorded (on the visual graph, 2 white points appear one louder volume and one quieter). I don't want to adjust the threshold further because then I really can't play any soft hits at all, but I would like to get rid of the problem because every time I play the rim it sounds unnatural (almost like a flam).

Additionally, sometimes when playing near the centre, the regular hit is played and a quieter rim click is heard also. My guess is that the separation between head and rim isn't that good. I've tried tightening the head and to some extent the problem is mitigated but ultimately it still feels pretty unnatural. Would appreciate anyone's thoughts as to how they fixed this, if they had the same issue.

Please post a screenshot, but it sounds like you might need to lengthen your decay time (worth playing with hold too).

That way you can keep threshold low to allow for soft hits, but anything under the decay threshold during the decay time doesn't trigger a misshit.

Thanks MWJ

I think, to be honest, this particular trigger design doesn't actually generate enough separation between the zones. The rim trigger is on a central platform underneath the centre trigger. This is connected to the rim via metal spokes. I'm going to see if it improves by just placing the rim trigger on the rim itself. I think this will clear up a lot of behaviour. As for my 16" tom, I have a similar design to the Drum Tec stuff, but I haven't got a very secure fitting inside the drum, so the trigger actually sags a little bit and this weakens the contact with the mesh head making triggering very difficult. Overall, I probably need to just tighten up the design of my triggers to something better.

Given how flexible and configurable eDrumin is, I'm actually wondering whether I'll just go back to a very simple trigger bar design with a central piezo on a trigger bar, and a rim piezo on the shell. I suspect this will work just as well as any other 2 zone design with complicated hardware.
