Low Volume 20in Ride: Edge hit triggers bow

Post by AKA Wayne »

Hey fellow edrummers and LV cymbal converters. I’m having an issue that I’ve got to believe others are experiencing. When I hit the edge the vibrations trigger a series of bow hits. I have a typical trigger box w/ piezo inside and edge membrane on top set up. This doesn’t happen with any of my other cymbals; 14in, 16in and 18in. Obviously this is an issue with the larger LV cymbals since they vibrate so much but the vibrations are why I love the LV cymbals, so realistic. Currently I’m using just a rubber profile for dampening. I’ve pretty much filtered out the Bow hits by increasing the threshold to 2.8 bit now light hits don’t register. Has anyone figured out a successful way of dealing with this?

I've seen a ride on Vdrums.com which have a circular rubber tube attached in the middle of the ride (underneath). It should help with the dampening and is still a neat soltuion.

I can't find the thread though

Yeah I agree, I think a mechanical solution is probably best for this. Any added mass will help reduce the dampening (and noise) - even some bolts and nuts screwed through the holes will help. Maybe play with some moongel (or bluetac) to explore best positions on your cymbal.

20" is big for a e-kit!

I’ve got 2 20in! I’ve got a different trigger set-up on the other and don’t have this problem. I love big cymbals and my acoustic kit has 2 20’s so that’s what I’m used to.

I think I’ll try some targeted moongels around the trigger box. I was just wondering if anyone else here has experience with this.

Increasing the decay value helps with this as well, I have my 20” ride at 40...

Thanks lalo. How do you set the decay to 40? Mine just adjusts the curve. Do you mean hold? Can you share your other settings?

sorry I meant tighten the decay curve in the 40 value, I'm afraid every cymbal response is different so what works for me may not work for you.
