Piezos & cone choice

Post by ohm-ish »

Hi

Which piezos and cone should I go for when making a snare pad?
Does the piezos have to be different for head vs rim?
I see some use a bigger piezo for the rim.

I found this set.. I have no idea if it's good or not

Perhaps r-drums.com has better quality stuff

I highly recommend quartz percussion if going diy.

They are high quality and the price is really cheap.

For the size it depends on the module. For the eDRUMin I imagine it doesn't matter (correct me if I am wrong)

He has both sizes so you can specify what you want if you wrote to him or in the order.

+1 for quartz percussion.
In europe you also can find roland cones at Drum-tec and in France at La Baguetterie, Roland cone are great of course but quartz are much cheaper and the quality is the same.

I’ve used 35mm piezos for head and rim since the beginning of my diy. When I switched to edrumin4 the 35mm head piezo was too hot so I added a trimpot to the snare build. Now that the edrumin10 handles hotter signals (thanks Rob!) my trimpot is not needed. So In short, if using the edrumin10 it probably doesn’t matter much. But if starting from scratch I’d use 27mm.

And I’d also say quartz are the best quality cones.

Quartz percussions, UFO Drums, all pretty good. Quartz have the best cones and Sylvain is very easy to deal with and ships very quickly.

For Toms and Kick I used some foam rods from a craft store or foam practice golf balls, believe it or not. The foam balls are layered with different colors so you can actually tell if the base is level. Both work fine in that application.

For a snare, I am speaking from an extensive record of personal failures - do not bother trying to DIY a foam cone.

UFO drums octacones are good - just installed one of the bridges last night.

If I need another I’ll check out quartz- haven’t tried them yet.

I just ordered some QUARTZ PERCUSSION. I'll give an update and share photos of install when they come in. Sylvain who runs quartz answered emails very fast and shipped very fast too.
