eDRUMin 2.0

Post by Mylo »

20 inputs, 4 controller inputs, host port, USB MIDI, MIDI In/Out, 7” or 10” touchscreen with the controller software built right in. Need an SD slot as well for firmware updates.

Course I’d want to be able to install my VST of choice and it will just work somehow.

Dare to dream.

Connect it to an iPad. With external 9v, you can keep that iPad screen on for hours. Midi out to your DAW and you're good to go.

I think he wanted to be rid of the computer! :)

Could happen if a big company buys eDRUMin for a stupid sum of money, so Rob can retire happily, and we get a module with VST sounds and the triggering of eDRUMin all in one.

Dare to dream! :)

Yep, still dreaming of my “Free the VST” AIO module.

But then I’m pretty happy with what I built up with the NUC. It will do for now.

Nah, I actually like that it’s a small unobtrusive box with no knobs or buttons. Once you get it dialed in, there really isn’t much of a need to keep tweaking it. I use an iPad for that if I have to. I also think that most people use it to trigger VSTs, so you have your computer nearby, anyway. And most importantly, computers and software need to be upgraded and updated, whereas I can see this little black box last for years, once the firmware settles into a more stable form. Then it’s just set-it-and-forget-it.

sounds like a nightmare to me. if robs sells to a big corporation, forget the incremental, collegial, constant and *free* development on your purchased product. all changes will take place behind closed doors, rolled out on a corporate timescale, and significant updates will most likely come out only with new models

i bought the ED4 even though i had no specific need for it partly to try out positional sensing, but mostly to support the innovation and the person behind it. i bought the ED10 because i wanted it to replace my old roland module, being about 10-15% of the cost of the only contender i seriously considered, having greater functionality in most areas and less in just a few. decades of corporate-led development and retail in edrums has not delivered that kind of, or speed in innovation (kudos though to roland, toontrack, and some others for what they have achieved).

if rob sells to a large organisation, all power to him. but it’s certainly not on my wishlist as a drummer or as a customer

Totally agree. The current eDrumIn is already fantastic due to Rob’s genius and passion, and his willingness and ability to respond to the community’s feedback. There’s no way that any commercial organization could have built this thing. They’ve had a quarter century to do so and it isn’t even close. Even if they’d tried, it would be full of features nobody wanted, with glaring bugs that never get addressed. Plus you’d get to pay a couple of grand every few years for the privilege of playing with the latest “flagship” that still sounds like ass.

I’m a firm believer in small, dedicated components that deliver on what they need to do, and can be swapped out and updated as required. I don’t want to be locked in to a single device that tries to do everything. So for me, currently, that means Roland triggers (they are fantastic), an eDrumIn interface, an Apple computer, Toontrack software, and a Tascam I/O. Other people can assemble their own preferred configurations and that’s how it should be.

I was just pulling your leg, you all. :D

It would be a great thing for Rob, but for us, it would be a very different experience.

I would agree to much of that, except one thing.

The Apple computer of late can not be upgraded, updated or swapped parts. It's a one in all soldered thing. If one thing dies, the whole computer is garbage.

I will not buy an Apple laptop ever again.
This coming from a guy who has been using Macs exclusively since 1988 (well, a bit before counting the Apple II)
I cannot support a company that does not allow for the user to swap a part, should it fail.

I used to love Apple and their drive to bring good (albeit expensive) products. The pirates have now become the greedy corporate machine.
Not cool....

Ok... ok.. you can leave off the touch screen. :D

20 inputs though... that’d be cool no? For use by drummer with big kits. I’m making two ED10s work just like I made 4 ED4s work. But a 20 input would satisfy every level of need with no compromises.

ED4 for expansion of commercial modules.
ED10 for the standard 5 piece and a few cymbals.
ED20 for the big progressive kit lovers.
