Excellent, it would be good to see how powerful and flexible your device is through the software if more control can be given between areas of sensitivity. Dave said it worked well in testing with a module and that's partly because you can set a cross-over, or so I was led to believe.

I'll definitely get to it, but I'm going to take some time off from development for a while now and just fix any bugs that come up.

I think cymbals with a piezo under the bell worked well with TD-12 and TD-20 because on those modules you can set up to 6 different cross-talk groups.
Then you could set the two inputs of this kind of cymbal to a dedicated cross-talk group, avoiding bow and bell to be triggered simultaneously, and in the mean time avoiding a hit on a tom to cancel a hit on the ride.
It's not possible anymore since the TD-30 where the Crosstlak is now global (no more groups). Dave can maybe confirm and explain how those cymbals are supposed to be used in recent drum modules.Is the global crosstalk function should be use to separate bow and bell ?

To my knowledge, never a module had a dedicated pad type for 3 zone ride with piezo under the bell (piezo/switch/piezo), eDRUMin could be the first.


Rob, Regarding DC voltage apply to piezo, I think you should not worry to much about it. I can re-check it out on my TD-30 but I'm sure that there's few DC volts always running through the ring of each imput, even if set to piezo/piezo. I even think there's also some DC volt on the tip of each input.

I had a bell piezo under a metal cymbal with my td12 and it was set up pretty easily. I just cranked the x-talk cancellation for the bow and bell inputs and they stayed pretty well isolated. Can’t the same be done with the edrumin?

Because a huge amount of crosstalk cancellation is usally needed to separate bow and bell (wired on two separate jacks), using a global crosstalk setting (as you should indeed be able to do with eDRUMin) can lead in unwanted cancellation between this cymbal and another pad that also need some crosstalk cancellation.
And imagine that you want to use 2 or more 3 zone cymbal like this, then using the global crosstalk setting lead into cymbals that cancel each other...
Of course it still playable, but not optimal.


As I said, with your TD-12 you can set a dedicated crosstalk group for your cymbal. That was a good solution.
A better solution is a dedicated pad type for those kind of cymbals.

Dave tested the cymbal on a TD-17, that's why he found it worked well. That's why Wayne's experience is similar too. It seems mad that newer modules can't cope, global groups are a way for Roland to save money?

Are these bell piezo wired to be switches?

I’m no EE but it seems to me the best way to get these metal cymbals to work well with dynamics and swells and all that would be to use piezo in all three zones but wire the edge and bell to act like switches.

I don't know, but I can confirm they are wired like a CY15. Does that help?

It could explain things, then it probably use a kind of Keith raper circuit, cause I can't imagine a simple pezo acting as a switch...

But I must admit that my TD-30 is also surprising sometimes... One day I made a two zone piezo/switch cowbell with a FSR as a switch. I realized after few minutes that it works almost perfectly with the pad type set to ... piezo/piezo.

I can confirm it's not a Keith Raper circuit.
