Edge Scaling

Post by monospace »

I'm having a hard time dialing in a CY-5 that I'm using as a china cymbal. The bow articulation is fine, but the edge is way too loud. I had it working fine in my old TD-9 by setting the rim gain to less than 1.
The control app edge scaler doesn't go below 1, which in some cases (edge cases, hehe) could be rather handy. Wonder if that could be added.

(I realize that my CY-5 could be the problem, or the specific sample in SD3, but it still would seem useful to be able to change that value to less than 1, if only for strictly creative purposes. Same with the other scalers, actually.)

Thanks for the pun. I'll look into that for version 1.3.1.

Thanks. I solved it for now by adjusting the MIDI input Velocity Curve inside of SD3, but ideally I'd like to be able to adjust it at the trigger level.

I haven't been able to get two zones working on my cy5 with the ED4.

Works fine as two-zone in my td9 internally and triggering sd3 - no go with the ED4

Check your parameters.

There's no reason why it should't work.

Hi,

I use 2 CY5, one with a stereo cable as a hihat and one mono which uses edge sense so that I still have two zones (edge for a crash and the bow for a splash). Both work fine, so maybe, as Perceval suggested, check your settings. Or try another cable, and maybe you could also try another input of the ED4 so that you can rule out faulty cable or input.

Best regards,
Pim

I am having almost the same problem. The bow (china) only triggers intermittently and very quietly. Hard bow strikes reliably trigger the edge sample (splash). Edge triggers a splash every time. I am in the midst of problem solving here, but I found it interesting that others have a similar problem with the same cymbal.

I think it’s just not that great of a trigger pad. It’s a 14 year old design and was originally meant as a static hihat cymbal, and I assume Roland did some internal massaging in their modules to make it usable. I like it because it’s small and looks okay in my setup, but it hangs and swings awkwardly, and it clearly needs quite a bit of tweaking to get it to respond nicely with eDrumIn and SD3.

I checked the cable to my CY-5 and everything was fully inserted and the cable was TRS. The edge sound plays when edge or bow is hit. Then I applied the same solution as Pin, and set the pad to mono to use edge sense. I now get bell and bow as expected.

Oddly, I now have noted similar behavior on my CY-15r. When I really wail on the bow, both the edge and bow sound (seemingly) simultaneously. [E10, one plug, bell sense]

Fully agree. It worked great as a hihat pad for me and then as a splash as my setup progressed.

maybe, maybe not. but my cy5 has worked flawlessly for over 10 years, and continues to do so - just not for me with the edrumin (for which it is not an officially supported pad).

the idea that roland would tweak their modules for a faulty pad rather than producing (yet another) reliable pad doesn’t sound likely to me

i will report back when i get a chance to work on it with the edrumin again but that won’t be soon. thanks for the responses
