ATV Hi Hat Issues

Post by Molson »

Anyone successfully using the ATV 14" Hi-hat? The bow/edge work great but I'm having a lot of trouble getting the controller to work correctly. I know the ATV controller is a bit of an oddball so any tips would be appreciated!

What have done to get it working so far? You calibrated it I assume? I really need to make a video on setting up hihats.

At first it wasn't recognizing the controller movement at all but I ended up resetting the input today and now it works. After calibration, I'm getting nice smooth movement but one annoyance is that foot chicks frequently trigger the bow. I've tried setting the HH xtalk all the way to 100 and that helps, but doesn't completely eliminate it. I may try taking off the lower cymbal and see if it still works well, similar to a VH10/11.

BTW, this is on 1.2 build 8 with the cymbal set to Roland 3 zone (haven't hooked up the bell input yet though).

A video would be awesome!

The HH xtalk shouldn't be set above about 50 in most cases

The first thing you should do is recalibrate. Use the mouse to manually adjust the calibration range so that it's a bit smaller than the actual range of the hihat controller.

You can also use the hihat gain control to increase the effective amount of crosstalk cancellation.

To be honest, I need to completely rework the way the hihat controller is implemented, and that's why I haven't gone ahead and made a video yet.

Anyway, see if those suggestions help.

Thanks Rob - recalibrated again and I was able to lower the xtalk back down. I still have room for improvement, but overall it's working well.

I put in an order in for a Roland VH-13. It's not the same, but the same principle. I'll be focusing most of my efforts on hihat implementation for version 1.3.

Sounds great. Let me know if you want an ATV loaner for a few months - I'd be willing to part with mine for a while.

I got my VH-13 today, and it definitely is not well supported; it looks like I have my work cutout for me. If you are serious about loaning me your ATV hihat, I would love to borrow it. I'll pay the shipping.

Sure, I'd be willing to do that. I live in the US so I'm not sure how bad the shipping costs will be.

Thanks again for the offer. I'm pretty sure I should be able to get it all working using my VH-13. I spent part of the day working on it and made some really good progress. Processing for the VH-13 is actually a lot easier than I thought. You'll see a huge improvement in v 1.3.
