EDI4 TD-30

Post by gearhead7 »

EDRUMIN 4 port v2.3.1.35
TD-30 v1.2.x

I believe in RTFM and I've done that. I've searched relative terms here and multiple drum forums including vdrums. Here's where I'm at. First, MIDI in any capacity is new to me so I've had to go out and get the basics. Feel pretty good about channels and notes and general operation. What I can't figure out is, how the TD-30 is looking at the EDI4 when connected?

I maxed out all my input ports and added the EDI4 to add two more cymbals. I've got the MIDI setup and MIDI pad assignment screen(s) on the TD-30. What I don't see or have, is anything relating to a MIDI device connected to the TD-30. Assuming this must be normal, this also leaves a large hole not having any settings or recognization of any devices connected. Guessing perhaps this is the way it is, or, this isn't needed by process of elimination.

I think I've got these two CY-12 cymbals configured in EDI ok and they show channel 10. Using TRS stereo cables and each have note assignments via custom notes. But, when on channel 10 and played, the Port 1 of the EDI triggers Crash #1 in the TD-30, and P2 triggers Crash #2. Not sure what the coincidence is about.

Decided to change the channel to 11 and it responds to a percussion kit and I get a glass bottle tink (p1) and a cowbell (p2) of some kind. Didn't realize chnl 11 was percussion kits. Tried chnl 9, get nuthin'. But the thing is, whatever I program on the EDI4, seeing nothing corresponding on the TD-30, not sure how to look at this.

Although I have lots of guesses, makes sense to leave these out of here for now.

I got the kit, a TD-30K, 1.5 yrs ago second hand. I can update the firmware to the final 1.3.x but just haven't done it yet.

Appreciate any/all insights

TIA

So based on what you've posted, it seems like everything is working as expected. The only problem you seem to be having is that the eDRUMin notes aren't matching the Roland ones? You said you have the inputs set to 'custom notes'. The note values you set there determine which notes on the Roland they will trigger, so it might just be a matter of setting the right notes, but I suspect you are running into a Roland imposed limitation where you can't use external MIDI to increase the number of sounds the module triggers. To get around this limitation, most people in your situation would use the MIDI output from the Roland and eDRUMin to trigger sounds in a software drum sampler on their computer.

Thanks for the reply Rob.

For the note settings, not trying to get notes outside of the roland notes. I'm on custom notes only because I was trying to improve upon using "kit piece" and, still learning to use the EDI. I hadn't changed any note values for custom notes, just used whatever they are by default with the pad types preset for CY-12 on Port 1 and Port 2 of the EDI.

I've reverted this back to "kit piece" and programed P1 for "Crash 1" and P2 for "Crash 2."

When I hit EDI-P1 (CY-12,) it triggers the "crash 1" port on the module which is an onboard port with a cymbal already programmed. When I hit EDI-P2 (CY-12,) it triggers "crash 2" on the module which is also an onboard existing programmed port. This is as before.

I tried something new: I programed the EDI P1/2 with a PDX-100 (each) and used kit piece 'Rack Tom 1/2' respectively. On the module, it triggers onboard and already programmed tom1 and tom2. So the cymbals follow cymbals and the toms follow toms. Perhaps I'm matching note numbers and is why. (I can get back with this info specifically, don't have it at the moment.)

On the module in the midi note screen it shows all 16 onboard ports with assignements and nothing more, the EDI ports don't exist to be programmed.

Maybe all the above is expected and the TD-30 isn't going to see the EDI-4 as an expansion device with four additonal ports? Right now that's how it's going.
