Maybe a minimum velocity threshold could be added?
Not easily. Again, I think if you spend some time dialing in your settings you'll see that there is no issue. If you are hearing pedal notes creeping into your hihat performance that shouldn't be there, it's likely because you need to dial in your settings better. With this new 'stand' method, the gain, xTalk, and curve settings all work together to perform two way crosstalk cancelation with the hihat cymbal. If pedal notes are masking some of your hihat hits, the issue could be:
1. Pedal xTalk control is set too high.
2. Pedal gain is set too high.
3. Pedal curve is too aggressive.

I’m beginning to think that my setup, an optical sensor underneath the physical pedal, probably responds more like a “Pedal” as opposed to “Stand” mode, which seems geared to the plunger style mechanism. Is that correct? Either way, I’m consistently getting better results in “Pedal” mode so I’m leaving it there for now.

Oh, and (EDIT) Pedal mode doesn’t get me the “chick” sound.

No, I think the stand method should work best for that setup. The stand method simply assumes that the hihat setup has a significant amount of inertia and a fix position where the hihat begins to stop going further down. Up to now, I've only been testing with my VH-13. I'll setup my VH-10 today and make sure it's triggering well too.

I setup my VH-10 and it's performing pretty well, perhaps not as good as my VH-13, but pretty close. I guess if I'm 100% honest, sometimes a low velocity pedal note can cut-off a ringing out hihat cymbal in an akward way--like it should decay quite slowly, but instead ends rather abruptly. Is that what you're noticing, or its something else? I think perhaps that's something SD3 should be looking into to improve realism.

Alright, you'll get your wish. I've managed to find a safe memory location for the a pedal sensitivity control, now I just need to find room on the UI for it. That fast stepping control is no longer needed as Superior Drummer fixed it's auto-splash. If I get rid of that, then there should be enough room.

I posted build 15
  • Added pedal sensitivity control for 'stand' controller type.
  • Fixed travel control not working.
  • Moved advanced controls into a drop down menu.
  • 'Stand' is now the default controller type.
  • Fixed gain and xtalk control disappearing when switching between CC and hihat levels.
  • Updated VH-13 Preset.
  • Updated Roland PD-125 Preset.

You've been busy Rob! Very nice work!

I finally got a chance to try positional sensing properly (w/ATV AD-S13).

This is with FW 2.3.1.13.

The main thing I found was that the settings really need to be honed in for normal/harder playing/hits. Light 'tippy-tappy' hits (say vel 77 and below) registered very accurately for a broad range of settings, but anything approaching normal playing (e.g. hard hits at vel 110+) is where it starts to need some adjustment - hardly suspiring due to the additional vibration from harder hits, but I kind of gave up on it a little while ago because of this.

However, spending a bit more time on it today, I found that with Off-Cntr at 220 and Time Thresh at 1.7 it works fantastically for my playing!

It won't consistency trigger off-centre on something like a hard-ish single stroke roll with left and right hands playing close to the edge (very challenging due to the frequent vibrations) but actually, it still triggers enough off centre hits in this extreme case to be worthwhile/noticeable whilst still blending seamlessly with centre hits.

Single hits are very reliable for me with these settings even at max velocity. Importantly, centre hits remain very reliable.

One thing I really could not get working is Edge hits as well. I tried everything - lowering the off-cntr setting, increasing and lowering the time threshold, but the edge setting always had to be so high to work at all it would break centre hits. I suspect a physical limitation of the ATV. As a result I just left Edge 'off' and focused on getting really good centre/off-centr triggering.

Sorry for the long explanation - overall it's a great addition and I'm very happy to leave it enabled now and enjoy a bit of extra expression! Thanks for implementing it.

It's perfect now, thanks Rob. It’s amazing to me how you’re able to keep improving on what I thought was already as good as it gets. The hats are a joy to play.

I'm glad appreciate the my efforts. I'm going to have to make one more small change to decouple the gain and thresh. In build 15, if you adjust the gain, it affects the thresh--it's not entirely intuitive.

I too, shared the same frustration as monospacewith the situation at low closure velocities, but had bigger control problems and so never brought it up. It wasn't like it was bad, just not quite natural. So I was glad to see someone else experienced it and it wasn't just my imagination. Beta build 15 provides all the tools needed to tweak the response perfectly. I can't believe it, I can actually play the nuances like a real hat, an unprecedented level of control.
A huge thank you and mad props for continuously polishing this app like a brass knob on the queens bedpost :D
