Snare Position sensing and Edge sensing without center hotspot

Post by modus »

Hi Rob

I'm not sure it's already discussed before. I'd like to suggest a position sensing without center hotspot issue.

As the picture below, Edge type sensor is for normal sensing. Center sensor is only for position sensing. Position sensing signal can use extra Kick channel (Ring) because kick needs usually only one signal. So, by eDRUMin software, two signal, position and normal (beating) signal would be combined for snare sound.

I think a snare needs Rim sensor so should be combined with Kick. While tom wiring can be Tip (tom edge sensor) and Ring (Center tom position sensor) because eDRUMin can do edge sensing with only one sensor.

You could test it with center mount Roland pad. Center sensor as position sensing, and Rim sensor as normal snare sensing. If you hit (head) center area with rim shot and (head) edge area with rim shot, it could be position sensor test.

Is it possible to update software?

There is no sensor layout like this (Roland digital snare has similar layout but different method?). So, if SW is possible, I'll make this sensor method as DIY some time later.

Thank you for your awesome eDRUMin!

While what you are asking for is totally doable, consider this:

1. Even edge sensors have a hotspot when you hit directly over the sensor.

2. Are you certain that having an extra edge sensor won't affect the signal that the centered sensor sees?

3. Hot spot suppression already works pretty well on many commercially available pads--the ones I have at least.

Wow thank you for fast response

Anyway, it's just my suggestion. I don't want to make you waste your time. As is, eDRUMin is awesome. It's your SW and It's up to you.

1. Even edge sensors have a hotspot when you hit directly over the sensor.
Sure, I know. if I rotates a snare and locate the edge sensor where I don't hit usually, I could avoid the edge sensor during play. And, normally we don't hit edge area.

Another suggestion in this case, if it's feasible, hotspot suppression can apply for the edge sensing in terms of edge position case.

2. Are you certain that having an extra edge sensor won't affect the signal that the centered sensor sees?
Possible crosstalk? Yeah, you are the best for eDRUMin. Could we set a kind of gain setting? But, I'm not sure. Probably you are right.

3. Hot spot suppression already works pretty well on many commercially available pads--the ones I have at least.
As you mentioned, hotspot suppression works well. But, I like to remove or avoid a fundamental issue if allowed. It could be closer to real snare response. eDRUMin would be even more perfect.

Thank you for your great work!

I love this idea and I believe it is worth developing. HSS is a formidable attempt to address hot spots, and works fairly well, but I have wrestled with it and believe that the above approach could be superior. If you could separate location from strike force, it would be a better approach IMHO as it would give the user more control. Having said that, if you could get PS to work with three-sensor designs (ATV, EFNOTE) that might be even better.

has this been tried yet? I'm intrigued
