Yamaha Cymbals: PCY-155 and PCY-175

Post by Intini »

I would like to buy 3 three-zone cymbals (rides). I am thinking about two PCY-155 and one PCY-175.
Has anyone used the PCY-155 and PCY-175? How do they compare with Roland's comparable offerings (CY-15R, CY-16R-T)? The PCY-175 is not listed on EDRUMin App on Yamaha's presets. I wonder if it works fine.
Does anyone use both or has experience with both Yamaha and Roland cymbals?

I just got a Yamaha PCY-100 (10" version) and it works fine for all 4 things it can detect.

You can always buy from a place with free returns.

Thanks! Do you also have Roland's? How does it compare to it?

I just got 3 Yamaha's PCY-155 today. I plan on using these 3 PCY-155 as crashes and I plan on getting one Yamaha PCY-175 as ride. But in the meantime, I will put 2 PCY-155 as crashes and one PCY-155 as ride as the PCY-175 is nowhere to be found where I live.
I also bought 3 boom cymbal stands (Pearl BC830s) for the PCY-155s but only got one as of now - the other two are still in transit. Therefore, I was only able to test one PCY-155 today. I am using it as a ride, and it is working well indeed. However, I had a problem with the rotation stopper. I placed the rotation stopper below the threaded region of the cymbal stand rod but touching the bottom of the cymbal sleeve (as mentioned in the manual). But the retaining bolt of the PCY-155 cymbal stopper is not being able to get a good grab of the cymbal stand rod. It looks like the rod is too thin and the bolt seems to be turning endlessly. What cymbal stand are you using with your PCY-100? Maybe I am doing something wrong (?).

Sorry, no experience with Rolands.

I'm actually also currently in cymbal hardware hell. I have a nice mic stand hanging around and am thinking of converting it, but it turns out going from 5/8-27 to 8mm would require a piece of hardware I can only find at MSC for $$$ so now thinking of returning some stuff and getting some kind of clamp on arm for it instead. Didn't realize cymbals were so much harder to mount than pads.

The 10" moves less than I was hoping when hit, more like a pad than a cymbal. I'd assume the bigger ones are better at that.

Re: the nut not fitting I've heard some older or odd cymbal stands use M6 instead of M8.

In general I'd go to the hardware store with everything and find a bolt that fits. From most to least likely based on newbie research: M8 (8mm Metric), M6, 3/8-16

Also if you got it from a music place they'd prob help you over the phone, if not them pearl.

And watch a few cymbal hardware videos on YouTube. For example before doing that I didn't know you want the cymbal against a little plastic sheath thing that goes on the rod to prevent something called keyholing.

Only today I got all three Pearl BC-830 cymbal stands with the three Yamaha PCY-155 3-zone cymbals. It is working very well indeed. I quite like the PCY-155s. They are quite sensitive. The bell has its sweet spot for triggering. But it is fine - not that narrow. I can certainly see myself using these cymbals for a long time.
Now I only need to wait for the availability of the PCY-175 for ride - but I am happily using the three PCY-155s in the meantime. I find it very positive that these Yamaha cymbals only need one stereo connection (one cable) to eDRUMin. Now I can have more cymbals or pads on my 3 eDRUMin4s.

Not sure if this is price gouging or not, but here's one for $280 new:

I have three PCY155's and one PCY135. They work very well with the E4 and E10. The zones trigger just where I expect and the choke works well. It sounds great playing them with Superior Drummer three zone rides and crashes. I don't really use the PCY135 bell as it's the hi-hat but it works.

Thanks! I am currently located in Brazil and Yamaha Brazil doesn't have any at the moment. I could import but the import taxes here are insanely high. So, I will wait a bit. So far I am enjoying the PCY-155s very much indeed.

Wow! Just like me: 3 PCY-155s! They are very good. I am thinking about buying a PCY-135 for a "splash" in the future. Do you think they trigger just as well as the PCY-155s?
One thing I noticed is that leaving the sensitivity potentiometer (a trim pot at the bottom of the cymbal) in the maximum position makes it even more sensitive - and excellent in my opinion.
