DIY 16" kick drum settings

Post by Ronyd »

Hi,

I had made a 16x20 rejected shell i got locally few year ago. I'm setup for double bass. I got a Drumeo quiet pedal (which i triggered, and DIy'd under pedal triggers also), but the feel using it with a real bass drum doesn't cut it.

So i cut down the shell to 16x12, using a 35mm piezo with a 3" foam cylinder cone (foam from a pillow), wood crossbar, wrapped foam inside. I got the idea from R-Drums selling they kick trigger that uses a 3" cylinder so figured why not try it.

Anyway, just wanted to get an input with the attached settings if they seem acceptable. I know Rob did a transient video that i watched and he mentioned not a have alot a brown in the scrolling view using decay, meaning not aggressive enough. But in order to rid double triggering, we would need to relax the decay? Still learning the settings.

The kick responding rather well with no double triggering with the pic attached.

Hi,

Settings look good. Kick drums don't typically need to have really aggressive transient settings and they will trigger fine. A snare drum needs very tight settings so that it can track all the nuances of a buzz roll, but that's not typically what you want for a kick.

You might want to change the pad type to 'Rubber Pad'. The 'Center Mesh' pad type is really optimized for snare pads and can sometimes lead to the start a transient being chopped off, like it is in the screenshot you've posted, which ultimately adds a tiny bit f jitter that you probably don't want.

aaah ok thankx Rob, I'll change the pad type.

Haven't got to the 2nd module yet for the DIY trigger LV cymbals. Just making shell the drums are setup with this module before tackling the cymbals.

thankx for the help
