Which Hihat pedal to use.

So, I am stuck. I have a Yamaha HH60 pedal and Alesis real hat continuous pedal. I can't seem to get either to be recognized and even to start editing. I have both the 8 and a 4. I have set up everything to a starting point pad and cymbal wise, even managed to to get bell bow and edge out of the crappy 14" dual input Alesis ride. With only one cable. But the Hihat controller has me stumped. The crappy Hihat cymbal works but I can not figure out how to engage the controller. Which pedal would be the better option? I also, have a Pintech Percussion VHHC1000 High Hat Controller - but it's not ready for primetime yet. No stand and forgot how it works. Does anyone have any step by step from scratch for the Alesis or Yamaha Hihat pedal controllers? Thanks in advance!
