Roland to Yamaha Splitter

Post by TheJay »

I've just made a splitter cable that includes a TE Connectivity 100k Metal Film Resistor 0.25W ±0.1% YR1B100KCC on one jack and think it is configured correctly. If I touch the edge or hit the bow I get one trigger and if I hit the bell, I get one and the the other trigger in sequence.

Apologies for my heavy breathing! I also forgot to show touching the edge but for info it triggers left.

Is this how you would expect it to behave and therefore I just need to tweak, have I not used some of the right settings so it's triggering two when hitting bell (although it appears to be one very quickly followed by the other) or have I wired it wrong?

If you are trying to use the Yamaha 3-Zone pad type, the input should be set to Stereo.

BTW, I don't think you are using that resistor correctly. If you are trying to attenuate the the bell signal you would connect that resistor from the ring to the sleeve (GND).

Thanks for your reply.

When I set it to stereo, eDRUMin doesn't allow me to set it to Yamaha wiring.

I reversed what Vince showed in his picture about one of these splitters: Image

Is that picture wrong then?

You don't need to set Yamaha wiring because you're using a Yamaha pad type.

Assuming you are trying this with a metal cymbal, I think you're in for a rough ride. Yamaha uses switches, not piezos. They are not the same.

Thanks for confirming. It is intended for metal cymbals. So to make this work I need to convert piezo piezo switch to switch switch switch on bell, bow and edge?

Are you attempting this conversion to conserve inputs?

The ride bell piezo, on a metal cymbal, is a much neater solution than adding a bell switch, as it can be placed underneath, allowing for more natural playing imo.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I'm trying to get bell, bow and edge on one cable/eDRUMin port.

I have a bell piezo, bow piezo and edge switch at the moment.

Could you please show me an example?

I would say it's impossible.
On a one-cable 3-zone ride cymbal, separation between edge and bell is done by mesauring different voltages, which is possible with a Yamaha cymbal grace to the 10k resistor wired on the edge swtich. The Bell switch give higher voltage because it has no resistor.
How could you get such a separation with a piezo on the bell ?
