Help with setting up snare

Post by lalo »

Hi, I received my edrum in today and updated the firmware to the latest one 1.0.2.2. I'm having issues with the calibration because it doesn't set right the snare I'm using, a drum-tec diabolo 13 snare, the rimshot and sidestick are very hard to trigger and the gains are pretty low, I don't know or understand how to manually calibrate it... Also for the positional sensing it would be helpful if you could explain how to set up superior drummer 3 to receive the Ps info from the edrumin, I tried to set it up but I don't know which map should I use and which articulations to select, I get the edge zone when hitting the center zone pretty hard. So thanks for any help.

Hi Lalo,

That pad should be used with the Mesh Center Piezo pad type. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "the gains are pretty low." Are you saying that the signal from the pad is too strong or too weak? As for setting up positional sensing, I'm planning to do a video on setting up positional sensing soon.

after doing the calibration the gain reglers are set to the minimum, if I do the calibration manually it's better, but still the x stick is very hard to trigger. I'm using the device with a atv-dx3 module and SD3, still having troubles with the midi mapping part, I added some DIY mono splash and china cymbals to the 2 and 3 inputs with a stereo cable, set them as dual cymbals with mono inputs but the splash takes the note of another instrument and the china triggers the hihat edge... I use the midi learn button but it continues to change everytime showing the message "the midi note is already in use".

As for positional sensing, I get the articulation edge always when hitting the center of the snare, it works but kinda inversely...

Currently, the velocity from x-stick is derived from the head piezo and not the rim piezo. I had done this because I found it to give more consistent and linear velocity translations with the Roland pads I have here. It looks like there is a lot more isolation between the head and the rim sensors on those Drum-tec pads. What I'll do to remedy the situation is add a control that allows you select which piezo the x-stick is based off of.

As for the note assignments for the china and splash, that would be an issue with my SD3 drum map. I guess I'll lay down my $400 and buy SD3.

So I bought SD3 and I've updated the drum maps for SD3. I haven't looked into positional sensing on SD3, but I will tomorrow. I also looked at deriving the Xstick velocity from the rim sensor. It's pretty simple to implement, but I'm not sure that it's necessary.

Do you think you could shoot a short video (with a smartphone perhaps) of the eDRUMin UI as you hit the head and the rim of your pad? If you could do that for me, that'd give me a better idea of what's going on. I have other Drum-tec users that aren't experiencing any issues, so I wonder if there's something else going on. You can email the video to support at audiofront dot com.

I had no issues setting up positional sensing on my snare in SD3.

Here's a useful link:

And here is a pic the settings I used my my system:

I tried the settings on your screen but still very weird if I hit the center I get edge sounds specially at high velocities... very weird, I'm using a drumtec 13" hand hammered snare.
Which midi map in SD3 are you using? I tried the default and was better than using the td-30 or td-50 mappings.

That won't be an issue with SD3. Try increasing your scan time a bit.

I've fixed and extended the Superior Drummer map in version 2.0.2.3.

the mapping for the splash and china in Sd3 works now perfectly, thanks. As for the positional sensing I'm still trying to dial it in but no success so far.
