Metal Cymbal Choking

Post by Mr_Bluesguy »

I have recently added edge switches to my LV metal cymbals, mostly for the choke function on crashes, and one on the ride for edge detection. Somewhat similar to what other are experiencing with rubber cymbals, I too have some issues with unwanted choking at random intervals. It usually (but not always) will resolve itself after waiting 5-10 seconds, or pinching the switch. It seems to occur mostly after several rapid consecutive hits.

I thought of kind of a weird idea I wanted to float past you. What if choking could be accomplished without a switch, like in the control software.
Maybe something like monitoring for a sudden disappearance of the waveform within a given time frame like what would occur when grabbing the cymbal, killing the resonance. I don't know if anyone has thought of this or has patents, or whatever. Not being a coder, I have no idea if this is even feasible or could be implemented without a major hassle. Just brainstorming. This would work for guys that just want a choke feature, obviously not workable for guys that also want an edge hit detector.

What firmware version are you using? I have played around with using waveform analysis for choking many years ago. And while it can work if the cymbal is choked immediately after hitting, if more than about 200ms passes, it's no longer feasible.

I'm using 2.3.1.21.
I think that for most guys the choke is quick immediately following the strike, (most likely within a quarter second) but I can see your point for jazz or ballads where cymbals might ring out a longer before choking. Oh well, it was just an idea. Might experiment with capacitive type switches using natural body capacitance. It's probably been tried before as well...
Membrane switches are such a PITA (especially for metal cymbals)!
Thanks Rob

If you update to build 27 or downgrade to build 20, your choking issues should be resolved.
