Bank Changes and Program Changes

Post by Chaser »

One question that has been asked countless times in forums is expanding a module without the use of Software/VST.
I have been focusing on that question and using the eDRUMin,more specifically eDRUMIN 4 as a low cost option for expanding Modules using their onboard sounds and preparing to post on the Alesisdrummer Forum..a "How to" using the eDRUMIN for Module Expansion.

Medeli Modules (Currently 30 in the Lineup) are re-branded for a number of Companies so there are literally Hundreds of Thousands out there..if not a million+ as some of the designs are well over 10 years old...one thing the majority have in common is they have a Percussion or GM Section.
The Percussion/GM Section has been discontinued over the years for many Brands..including Roland to make room for User Sample Imports etc etc.
There are on average 10-15 complete Kits and many undocumented GM Kit Banks that have mixed Kit pieces with repeats of other banks..there are full banks of snares , crashes, rides etc assigned to the full range of MIDI notes..Program Changes 90-94/95 when implemented seem to send a shut off to the module.I have not only been able to successfully expand the modules I have been able to simulate "Bleeds" between the Digital Section and the GM Section.
I have mapped out the GM Section for the most popular Medeli Module designs which cover the Alesis Lineup DD512(DM7X,Nitro,Surge)..DD650 (Command,Crimson/II,DM10 MKII Studio,Forge)..DD680(DM10 MKII Pro) and other companies offerring a re-branded version of those Designs.
The DD401(Turbo,Debut,E-Drum Total) are the cheapest and sold at a much higher rate even have a GM Section but No MIDI Input which is unfortunate as it would have greatly improved the module which out of the 30 Medeli Modules rated 1-30..1 being the Highest..this would be 29.
The GM Sections have No editing available however I have been able to match levels to both sections using "gainstaging" and excellent results expanding even splitting the inputs and using the edge sense with both Mesh and Rubber Pads.

The question I have is..
Using a 2 button switch..1 button for Bank changes..1 button for Program Changes.
I am able to go through the banks with multiple MIDI Note assignments and change Kit Pieces and Program Changes to change Kit Banks..
However..the Program Changes are locked in at the same 2 Program Changes for all banks..is it possible to have multiple Program Changes assigned or are the Program Changes locked to the input?..maybe this is a Feature request to be able to assign different Program Changes per bank..this would allow each bank to be comprised of 2 different Kits instead of all of the banks only being able to select Kit pieces from 2 Kits.
The pedal function would remain the same ..switching from Prog1 to Prog2 and back and forth only each bank would have different Program Change assignments (1-127) and allow the use of multiple kits.

I am currently setting up Presets for all the modules and also looking into implementing the Snapshots feature ..unfortunately that feature isn't possible for the ED4.

I check the Forum Daily on the improvements constantly happening and the Community participation with trial and error on trigger innovation. It is good to see as Forum participation has changed a lot over the years especially with the advent of Social Media.

Keep up the great work !!

I'm not really sure what you are asking for. The memory where the program change assignments are stored belongs to the pedal input, and not the trigger inputs. So if you were wanting to send different program change messages for different trigger inputs, that would definitely not be possible.

The pedal input does however have its own set of note banks, and while it's not currently implemented, it might be possible to hijack those note banks to store 4 sets of program change assignments, and then the pedal could change what program change messages it sends depending on what bank the trigger input is set to. That said, it would be a lot of work, and I suspect you would be the only person who would use that feature--very hard to justify.

That's what I was looking for...yes I am the only one currently that would probably use the feature as I haven't posted the "How to" yet so no one knows any of this is possible as currently most use the eDRUMIN for Software/Vst not for expanding a module utilizing it's internal sounds and was curious if it was possible to increase Program Changes as then it would allow multiple Kit Banks/Kit pieces(Instruments) to be accessed as currently only 2 Kit Banks be used at one time for all 4 banks, which is still much better than having no choices/control at all.
The only Alesis module that could be expanded was original DM10 Module as it had an extra 35 MIDI Notes that could be assigned sounds from the module

Thanks for your time and quick response..it is appreciated...
