Resonant heads??

Post by Coloredtoad »

I am doing an A to E conversion and I was just wondering what others are using for the resonant heads. I was going to do 3ply for the batter and was thinking of a cheaper 1ply for the resonant head. Is this the normal way of doing it?? Are people using a 1ply mesh for the bass drum resonant also??

Many just use an old mylar head, but cut it so that it's only a small ring left. Two centimeters or so. Any head (mesh or mylar) that fully covers the bottom will add some resonance to the drum.

I screw on an old acoustic one tight, and then just cut it with a Stanley knife close to the inner edge. Serves no purpose except holding the bottom rim on for aesthetics.

With my snare I used some locktite to secure the lug bolts.

I never did it, but I'd say that for aesthetics and noise, the best compromise is a one ply mesh head.

I used the original mylar heads that came with the cheap shell pack I bought for my DIY kit. To deaden the heads (and improve mass and trigger response a bit) I simply cut sheets of rubber roofing material (thick very flexible rubber) I had lying around to the size of the shell and dropped them in. They stay put under their own weight on the resonant heads. I just make sure I only transport them batter side up so as not to lose their position. I could have glued them in place but I didn't want to possibly have the glue show through the coated white head look from down below the rack tom.

For the kick drum I used a piece of felt on the reso head. It does the trick of dampening any sympathetic vibrations from striking the mesh head and looks cool to me!

I kept the clear mylar ones that came with the kit on. I quieted them down with Emads.
