I was planning to buy a goedrums hi hat controller but I've seen that hall sensor is supported by eDRUMin on other thread.
I'm just not sure what is a hall sensor ? Is it better than a goedrums or I better stick with my first choice ?
Thanks

Re: Hall Sensor vs other
I've read a little bit more about hall effect sensors controllers.
Here's my findings:
It is a really cheap way to build a hh controller.
it's seems linear, so a lot of positions while goedrum seems to have only 4 positions : Open, 1/2 Open, 1/4 Open, Closed.
So it's seems that the hall effect would be better but am I missing something?
What's your recommendation?

You must have read the it's the goedrum module that can only give 4 HH position.
The goedrum HH controller should give as many position as a VH-11.

I've read it in the item description of the controller : https://www.ebay.com/itm/221631704295Sly wrote:You must have read the it's the goedrum module that can only give 4 HH position.

Re: Hall Sensor vs other
Indeed, but they also say that it has a variable resistor.

Hehehe their description is not that good.Sly wrote:Indeed, but they also say that it has a variable resistor.
So if the resistor is variable, does the controller have any advantages against doing a hall effect sensor (there are really cheap to make).
Exemple, can splash technique be used with hall effect? I know it can with Goedrum.

I was under the impression that the goedrums controller is variable.

Very interesting design, but I still don't know the difference with Goedrum controllerdsteinschneider wrote:I was under the impression that the goedrums controller is variable.

Which is better and why?

Re: Hall Sensor vs other
I have discovered a flaw with my design. The magnet is permanently fixed to the end of the rod and the sensor box height isn't adjustable so I need to stay with the amount of up and down travel of the hi-hat cymbal I originally set. If another drummer wants to adjust that I'm not sure how that will go.
Eddie Halen's simpler design where the magnet travels up to the top of the "stirrup" where the sensor is mounted I think solves that issue. It's also asimpler design. I bought the components for that but I'm going to buy another hi-hat stand (used) for that build because I'm happy with the way my current one is playing.

The goedrum controller is reasonably priced and apparently a robust design. It's easy to install. You don't have to figure out how to mount the sensor or magnet.Very interesting design, but I still don't know the difference with Goedrum controller

So the DIY route only costs a few bucks in parts but you have to work out the mounting and solder the leads. Vdrums user Eddie Halen's design where you solder the sensor leads directly to a female TRS jack and then zip tie that to the stirrup is about as simple as it gets. Mounting the magnet to the end of the rod will vary with each stand but I think Eddie Halen is just using the magnetic force to hold it in place on his stand.
