Understanding Gain control and level indicators?

Referring to picture on page 12 of manual. When striking a drum or cymbal, should the level indicators be close to the gain control? If the level indicators are higher than the gain setting, does the mean the piezo is too hot?
What is the relationship between the fain setting and the level indicators? Is this similar to the gain and level adjustments on a mixer?
