A2E Snare: rim piezo position

Post by ffmcloud »

Hi everyone,

I did not find a post, where that topic was discussed. If I overseen it, pls let me know.

I am planning to convert my 14" Tama Rockstar DX Snare to an e-Snare.
I ordered an center mounted trigger bar with an seperate rim piezo.

Before I start assembling it, is theren an "optimal" position for the rim piezo to consider?
Intuitively I would say about 4:30 or 5 o'clock, between rimshot and sidestick position.
Or could you accidently trigger it, if you would hit the snare slightly with your knee?

And is there an "optimal" position for the hight? Near the top head, bottom head or in the middle?

Or does anything of this matter at all?

Would love to hear about your experience and/or opinions.

The best place is the underside of the trigger bar, below the head sensor.

Did not think about that, but it sounds like a legit option. Thanks!

+1 interest from me.

I have a full 1991 Tama Rockstar DX kit - Jet Black, double BD and all :-) - that I am A2E converting. Finally received my ED10 this week and am going to re-open the 14" steel snare this weekend and move the piezos from side to center to get full benefit of ED10 positional sensing. Was wondering the ideal place to put the "rim" piezo. Now I know!

BTW, I bought rim piezos for my toms too. I currently use AD2 for VST. It only supports "Tom Rimshot" articulations. I thought I was going to center-mount the tom piezos similar to the snare, and use the full ED10 hotspot suppress and positional sensing abilities for the toms too. Do you know if any of the main VSTs support that?

Best regards,

Nice, sounds like a beauty.
I bought a Tama Rockstar DX 5-piece kit in majestic purple a few weeks ago, with Hardware and cymbals for a relativly good price.
But I am only using the snare for the conversion. Also convertet a 16" Bass Drum and as Toms I use 3 Roland PDX 100. Sort of a "Hybrid", although its no a hybrid kit in the mean of acustic and electronics combined. I will post pictures in the "Show us your builds!" thread if it is finished.

I am using AD2, too. As far as i know there is nor VST that supports positional sensing on the Toms. If you own the Fairfax 2 kit, you can map the "side stick" to the shell hit in the flexi 1 spot. It has two sounds, and I used this to map the rims of the both upper Toms.

I like AD2, because it is not to overly packed, but what I dont like ist, that there are only edge sounds on the Cymbals. Unfortunaltely there are no bow sounds except for the Ride-Cymbals. Superior Drummer 3 supports bow sounds on Cymbals. But I'm currently not willing to switch.

Here is my current AD2 setup. I use the Cymbals 4-6, Ride 2 and Flexi 2 (snare without snare wires) and switch the banks with a footswitch.

Thanks for the Flexi tip for AD2!

Hi Rob,

I mounted mine on the shell using the l bracket supplied by UFO drums. Works fine but I'm interested in testing out how it would work affixed to the middle of the crossbar underneath the cone. With the UFO crossbar the piezo is attached directly to the cross bar with effort to isolate. I suppose the cone itself is isolation. Just curious about your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Isolation between the two piezo's is not necessary (nor wanted). If you are getting good results the way it's setup now, then I wouldn't change it.

Hi Rob

Curious if you can elaborate on "not wanted"?

My head piezos are mounted on an R-Drums foam decoupler on a wooden cross bar. The rim piezos just sit directly on the cross bar, some to the side, some middle-ish.

It all works OK now I think - although always room for improvement - so just curious if you recommend NO foam decoupler.

I think the foam is probably fine.
