This is a continuation of the last post.
I use the piezo rim sensor in conjunction with a 3 cone DIY trigger system.
Obviously, you won't get position sensing with this set up, but the trade off is consistent 360 degree triggering around the rim and no crosstalk with the head sensors or double triggers.
Questions?
Stay with 3 triggers per drum, or drop to one for Positional Sensing?

- This shows the piezo cable output with a head strike. Almos no signal above threshold. Piezo cable is impact sensitive, not vibration sensitive.

- An alternative to placing the cable sensor between the rim and head.

- DIY 3 cone trigger. VERY sensitive, full dynamic range. Mild hot spotting over each trigger but you almost never hit there unless heavy drinking is involved.

Do you find the 3 cones lead to less of a hotspot than 1 cone + magic eDrummin algorithms?
Oh and I think the misunderstanding was mine, I didn't realize the cable was only sensitive to strikes, not vibration. So I thought 1 cone in the center plus the piezo wire would be like having a perfectly symmetrical set of disc piezos around the rim, and this would work with both eDrummin hotspot reduction and positional sensing to be able to get Hit, SideShot and RimShot.

Perfectly understandable misunderstanding. That would be the holy grail, wouldn't it?
Yes, I find (personal experience only) the three cone solution does provide less hotspotting. I initially set up with a center mount single with hot spot suppression dialed in. To be fair, it was quite effective but just didn't quite get me all the way there. I think there are so many factors at play in hot spotting that it just comes down to how well the mount structure is built and the heads and other materials used. Edrumin's hot spot algorithm is spot on for some guys and others find it useless. It's not a one size fits all solution. The three cone configuration is one of many options and I personally find it very effective. Mine has superb sensitivity with full dynamic range. There is moderate hot spotting over each cone but nothing like over a center cone. And you've got to be REALLY off target to hit one of the three. If I was playing jazz or world music, I would miss position sensing, but for bar band covers, it's not even an issue.
