Problem with one of my cymbals

Post by bpjacobsen »

I have my main kit working pretty darn good now, except my one cymbal is acting strange as follows;

1. When I'm hitting the bow, it sporadically activates the choke and cuts off the sound.
2. The edge, though it seems to register hits, does not seem to really put out much sound
3. the choke does work when I squeeze it

I confirmed the edge/bow have the correct midi note numbers assigned
all cymbals are using dual zone goedrum trigger boxes but this one, I initially had a 3 zone box connected but only using bow and edge. So I figured maybe it's a faulty box. but I took off a known working dual zone box and connected to this cymbal but same issue continues with the random choking when hitting the bow and really no edge sound. This is my ride cymbal but I'm not using a 3 zone with the bell. I have the bell connected to another port separately from the rest of the cymbal and it is a piezo attached to a separated cut out bell from another cymbal with rubber under the bell to keep it separate from the main ride. works a treat. My issue has nothing to do with the bell. I may try to take a video later but it won't have sound so not sure how much it will help other than showing what's on the control app while hitting the cymbal. Any help would be much obliged.

Are you using version 2.3.0.6 or 2.3.0.7. I made some adjustments to the switch sensitivity in build 7, Soni would try using that version to see if the random choking clears up.

As for the edge velocity, have you adjusted the edge scaler control?

Rob, according to the current downloads section, the latest is 2.3.0.8. I assume this would work? was on 6 so I updated to 8. still need to mess with edge scaler control. but the choke issue is far from resolved. It's completely unplayable. weird b/c all 4 of my other cymbals using the same setup work fine. Not sure what the deal is with this one? I'll try and grab a video of what shows on screen in case it helps any.

Then it seems you have a mechanical issue. The membrane switch is activating when you hit the bow.

Nope. I figured out that I hade two edge hits in sd3 for some weird reason. I changed the midi number to the other one and the issue I have now is that I'm only getting edge hits registering when I hit either the edge or the bow. I confirmed the midi assignments for bow/edge match SD3 but it remains a mystery why I only get edge hits for both. I tried reversing the membrane ribbon cable but no difference. the choke works perfectly though now. It's just really odd b/c the other 4 cymbals using the exact same trigger box are working fine. At least it is playable, but just can't do a ride beat on the bow (which I do a lot so I need to figure this out eventually) Here is a video I tried to take showing what's happening. maybe you will spot something?

side note: I'm super happy with the ED otherwise. the triggering is second to none. way better than the Strike module. Love the control app. so easy to use. just need to read more about tweaking. especially the Hihat. that is still much better then it was but I got more to learn overall. This product is just simply genius.

How do you expect to get 3 zones when you are using the dual zone metal cymbal pad type. Use the 3 zone pad type, which used 2 inputs.

I think you misunderstood me Rob. I'm not trying to get three zones. I'm using a two zone cymbal trigger. My bell is on a completely Separate trigger and port. Think of my bell as another drum pad. Forget anything I said about the three zone trigger box I have already removed that. So all of my cymbals are using dual zone boxes. So I should have bow and edge only. For some reason, As you can see in my video. I'm only getting the edge registered when I hit both. At this point I don't know if the problem lies with the trigger itself or sd3 or ED. All I know is the four other cymbals are working fine. I need to play around with it more i'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

fixed! the issue was I had the edge threshold way down to near zero so it was triggering too easily. After raising it up, it's all working now. thanks!
