This is so blindingly obvious I'm embarrassed to admit it took me as long to stumble upon it as I did.
My music computer is across the room from my drum set, so while I can somewhat see what's happening, calibration involved a lot of hit, get up, tweak, sit down, repeat.
Blinding flash of the obvious:
Run the 5 pin MIDI out to the music computer and plug the USB into my Surface tablet which sits on the music stand. All the calibration settings are stored on the box itself, so you can tweak the response while hearing how your VST responds, then plug it all back into the music computer when the calibration is done.
