MIDI Out weirdness with the ED10

Post by monospace »

So I've been setting up my new ED10 today and noticed something weird.

My laptop running Logic/SD3 is in a rack 15ft away from my drum set (I need it there to accommodate other instruments/musicians.) So I have a long MIDI cable going from the kit to a Tascam US16x08 audio/MIDI interface, from which an equally long cable sends the computer audio back to my headphones. This worked fine with my old TD-9, so I figured I would use the MIDI Out from the ED10 in the same way. That way I can still use the device's USB port to connect my iPad, and do my tweaking while seated at the kit. This worked, for most of the time.

But twice now, the MIDI connection got wonky.

Both times, it started when I connected a second Control Pedal, a cheap Casio sustain pedal to function as a bank switcher. I don't know that it matters, but that's what I observed.

What happened is that even though both the Control App on my iPad, and the MIDI monitor in SD3 showed a signal being detected and visually triggering the pads in the UI, I would not get an audio signal back to my headphones. When I walked over to my laptop and clicked the drums on the screen, I did get the audio.

So the first time I shrugged it off, disconnected and reconnected everything, and thing started working again. Then it happened again, and now, no matter what I do, I cant get the MIDI Out from the ED10 working again. Signal is still showing in SD3, and I can still click the drums and hear sounds (so it's not the interface, I think.)

The odd thing is that when I i switch to USB MIDI, I don't have any issues at all. It's just not ideal considering my setup, because I can't use my iPad that way. For what it's worth, I'm all dialed in properly after two weeks of owning the eDrumIn, it's been fantastic, but I really would like to be able to use the MIDI Out instead of the USB.

Shit this has been lengthy probably because I've been drinking. I'll happily elaborate tomorrow if anything's unclear.

Most likely a bug. I will look into it next week.

Thinking about this some more, I suspect there's some fine tuning I need to do with the pedal sensing feature of the pedal input. I suspect it momentary switched to 'Expression pedal' , and sent out CC7 which turned the volume in SD3 all the way down. That's my best guess. If you disable to the pedal sensing by clicking on the 'sense' button, it'll stay locked as a footswitch.

Do you know if the footswitch you used in normally open or normally closed?
