How to: Melodics with eDRUMin + Superior Drummer 3 etc.?

Post by KJIB »

In the post referred to below, it's clear that there's a way to get the Melodics learning software to work with eDRUMin modules. I figured that a separate post to the thread I refer to here is in order because Melodics isn't the main thread of that. I'd like to know the full set of steps to getting eDRUMin, an electronic drum kit and whatever else is required to fully work with Melodics.

So, here's the post saying that Melodics can be made to work with eDRUMin:
I have also posted in the Melodics Slack feature request to ask for eDRUMin support "out of the box" so we don't need to worry about their updates zapping manually changed config files and all that tedious malarky :?

I'd like to ditch my whole TD25kv drum kit and replace it with eDRUMin modules with Jobecky electronic drum/cymbals. I also want this to work with Melodics. If I only have eDRUMin modules to get MIDI to the computer then I also need something like Superior Drummer 3 to generate drum sounds. Now I really only want to have the need for one computer so I would also need to run Melodics on the same laptop, (Windows 10 in my case).

Questions

(1) I'm guessing that normally, only 1 application can "grab" the MIDI and the other will not see anything. How do I solve this, is it actually a problem :?:

(2) Both Superior Drummer 3 and Melodics output sound but will they both work together so the sound from both can be heard at the same time or will I only hear one of them. If I can normally only hear one of them, how can I get the sound I'd need from both :?:

I think that covers it for now. Hopefully answering these questions will help me and others avoid horribly expensive drum modules when we could use some eDRUMin units :)

On Windows, only one application can access the USB MIDI from an eDRUMin at a time. Do you really need both simultaneously?

You could try something like Metaplugin or Bidule to split the signals, and merge the audio.

If I only have eDRUMin modules and no drum computer then I need my laptop to make the drum noises (so MIDI in to something like Superior Drummer 3) and then to practice (at the same time as wanting to hear what I'm doing) I also want Melodics to pick up MIDI in too and it also generates audio for the music/clicks etc. you're playing along to.

So, yep, I need both applications to be able to read the MIDI on the same laptop. It must, be possible... [Light bulb moment... goes away to have a check...] After a little digging, it looks like the driver for eDRUMin would "just" need to be changed to be "class compliant" "multi-client" for MIDI, according to this thread: https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=528789 but Audio Front would presumably be the people we need to do that before we can make use of it.

Same for audio, I need to hear it from 2+ sources (drum sounds software and lesson software, possibly others too). It turns out that Windows 10 can do this but not by default. You've to go into settings and it looks like you can either have multiple sound apps to a given audio device or multiple audio devices and allocate them as you see fit to different applications.

So, it looks like we "just" need a driver update for the eDRUMin :?: Pretty please 8-)

Class compliant MIDI devices are not multi client on Windows. Can SD3 output (pass through) the MIDI it receives?

Looks like it can. So you would just need another MIDI interface with a loopback cable. If fact I think you might even be able to use virtual MIDI ports.

Loppbe comes to mind.

So, with Loppbe: https://www.nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html it looks like it will not only pass the eDRUMin to the 2 things I wanted but up to a total of 8 applications if I really want to go crazy. Excellent, thank you Rob.
