Using a DAC

Post by OftheSeven »

I asked on Vdrums but since I'll be using it specifically with the eDRUMIN unit want to ask here.
Anyone try or have luck using just a DAC to listen to their VSTs while edrumming?

Can it be more cost effective and provide good/better latency than a full I/O interface.
Something like the Apogee Groove or Audio Engine D1/D3.

Of course.

The audio interfaces mentioned at VDrums usually will include ADC for instruments inputs and a DAC for outputs.

If you don't need the ADC part, then just use a DAC. For the same price, you will probably get a bit better quality since you only use one side of the conversion.

But, it all depends on the drivers used.

I often use the NuPrime uDSD when I don't need inputs. Works well.

Good to hear.
What sort of latency were you able to achieve?

small kits at 32 samples.

Full kit at 64 samples.

If you can keep it under 128 samples, it should be fast enough.

Hello Perceval,

Interesting that you posted small kits at 32 buffers, larger at 64.

I've been running 64 at 48khz and noticed that larger kits sometimes introduce some audio artifacts that are never present in the smaller kits. With my well optimized i5-3360 16GB 1TB SSD 7 year old Lenovo laptop I can run 64 buffers and any kit under 2.5GB runs clean.

When I get up to the 3-4GB range it's still playable but I'll hear a few clicks/glitches.

In the 4-5GB kit size it becomes noticeable. Moving up to 128 buffers fixes the issue with larger kits.

Using a Zoom U24 recommended to me on vdrums

What I didn't know is that there's a Zoom U22 which is smaller ergo cheaper.

1.3ms output, 64 buffers. Edrumins running on about 3.5ms. 4.8ms total latency is imperceptible.

Thanks for the info. Is this on a Mac or PC running @ 48000 sample rate?
