I've seen in the manual that pedals and switches are supported. I'd like to use a pedal as on on/off switch for snare strainer. Would this be possible and what's the best pedal for on/off?

That's how you could use the banks.

#1 snares on, #2 snares off, #3 snares on, #4 snares off.
Then set up the pedal to go through the bank's numbers.

You could do handle that as perceval has suggested,, however if you VST has a switch to toggle the strainer on and off, then a single sustain pedal or switch will work nicely. You can have it send a CC message to your VST.

I'd like a pedal that operates like a switch rather than a sustain pedal, as that would automatically turn off when foot lifts rather than alternating like a switch. Does such a thing exist?

I've been working on pedal control this week. First I want to address footswitch "tech". Forgive me if anything I cover seems obvious, for me it wasn't even though I vaguely knew how these work before. There are latching footswitches which click to a different state with a tap of the foot. So circuit open (tip and sleeve wires not connected- tap foot - circuit closed (tip and sleeve connected). Momentary switches are only in the other state while you press down, that's why they are referred to as sustain pedals because digital pianos require the pedal to be pressed down for sustain.

The eDRUMin pedal input is a special pedal input that has many capabilities. One of the best of those switch related capabilities is to send a program or bank change increment if you do a short press on the momentary switch. If you do a longer press it decrements the bank or program.

I use live performance software called Cantabile which can "bind" a midi event such as program change to a Superior Drummer preset. It's able to capture everything about the state of Superior Drummer for each preset slot. If I tap forward to preset slot 6 it loads that SDX/Kit and edrum settings such as articulations, note numbers etc. When I short tap the pedal again it goes to 7 and loads that kit and settings. My eight year old laptop with extra RAM and SSD loads the kits in 3-4 seconds. If the kit is only changing the snare it loads in 1-2 seconds.

I could do the bank switch where all the sounds you're going to use are in a single kit and the different banks are just changing the midi note of that pad so it triggers a different drum or cymbal. Those changes are instant.

Luke of the edrum workshop YouTube channel did a review of a device called the e-strainer that goes inline (you plug your existing snare and another input into it's female input, I think it might additionally need a splitter, and then you plug it into the snares input. When you flip the e-strainer the signal from the snare goes to the second input. He mentioned they are still working some bugs out (the latching is a little loose and so the unit sometimes was going snare off just from jostling the snare while playing).
