I've been compensating for low velocity bow hits by adjusting them in Superior Drummer . Today I decided to look at the MIDI velocity of bow hits coming in and noticed they increase uniformly from soft hits under 10 up to a maximum in the 80's. The edge and bell for the same calibration are kind the opposite. They start in the mid velocity range and easily reach 127. Is there any way on the eDRUMin side to even out the velocities between edge bow and bell?
Thanks for any comments on this.
EDIT: I've been doing a lot of reading on vdrums - I found this quote:
"The bow area of the cymbal with the dimples is meant to be played with the tip of the stick. The edge area of the cymbal with the ribs is meant to be hit with the bow/shank of the stick and is hit at an angle to the horizontal plane of the cymbal."
This brings up a question - I do play the hi-hat that way (shank on edge) and mostly use that for closed hi-hat in rock songs. Is the lower sensitivity of the bow on purpose?
Is there a way to increase gain for just bow in 3 zone Yamaha cymbal?

From the questions your asking, I assume that you have the GAIN setting for your cymbal to to max (7). Is that correct? Exactly what Yamaha cymbal are you using?

Hi Rob,
It's a PCY-135. It has a gain adjustment underneath I've just left in middle. I need to read up on how that adjustment affects the cymbal's operation. In the eDRUMin I've only calibrated it by using the Calibrate button. I usually use the edge for rock hi-hat 8th notes so this isn't an issue that's keeping me from playing. Also as I mentioned I can compensate in Superior Drummer. My interest here is learning more about fine tuning a cymbal in the eDRUMin control app.
Thanks,
Doug

This is going to sound counter-intuitive, but to get best results from that cymbal (maximum dynamics), you'll need to turn down that gain adjustment underneath the cymbal a little bit. After you turn it down, calibrate again and take note of the value of the GAIN slider in the eDRUMin control application. When the calibration feature results in a gain of about 3, you'll know that you've hit the sweet spot for that cymbal.

Hi Rob,
That is opposite what I would have tried . I will turn it down until a calibrate gives me a gain of 3.
I'll post back how it goes.
Thanks

Hi Rob,
That worked. I turned down the screw until max hits on the PCY135 with the gain set to 3 reached the top of the meter. Then I calibrated again and the hits are more even between the edge and bow zones.

Hi Doug - I didn't want to start a new thread since I plan to use a PCY135 or 155 as well.dsteinschneider wrote:Hi Rob,

I watched Rob's video about setting up the Roland CY15R with one cable to get the 3 zones. Is the setup is the same with the Yamaha except you choose Yamaha in the application?
Also, I assume the 3-zone ride takes up an input by itself and can't be shared with other pads?
Thanks

Exactly. Choose the Yamaha 3 zone cymbal.OftheSeven wrote:Hi Doug - I didn't want to start a new thread since I plan to use a PCY135 or 155 as well.dsteinschneider wrote:Hi Rob,

And indeed, you can't split it if you want to keep all 3 zones.

As Perceval wrote, yes the Yamaha PCY135 (and PCY155) use just one TRS input and you get three zones with the eDRUMin. One interesting thing for me was the zones when connected to my MegaDrum were in the wrong places. The only bell hit I could get was by hitting the bow area in front of where the bell starts. With the eDRUMin the zones are exactly where they're supposed to be.
