Weird double-trigger issue with hihats + other triggering problems

Post by alexbassguy »

Hey everyone - new to eDRUMin and while I'm THRILLED with the concept and customization, I'm having some really strange triggering issues.

I recently bought a used ED10 on Reverb alongside a Jam3 kit and Zeitgeist CAD metal cymbals from drum-tec. I'm coming from a Roland VAD507 kit which, while great, is a bit too big and cost way too much for me to hang onto when compared with other options. The Jam3 toms, kick and snare all trigger great, even with mono-splitting the toms and using Edge Sense, it all works great. All the issues are with the cymbals - and I don't think it's because they're metal.

Biggest issue I'm having is a double-trigger with the hihat controller. I'm attaching an image to better illustrate. Basically, if I'm grooving and playing pedal chicks on the hats, I'll get an additional pedal note trigger about 50ms after I actually play it. It shows up as a big spike on the Travel and Splash Sense displays. It's faster than you could physically play it and always hits at 127 velocity and peaks out the gain meter. It also happens on both pedal inputs on the ED10. The really weird part - when I hook up the Zeitgeist hihats to my TD27, they trigger just fine. When I hook up my VH11 to the ED10, it has the same double-trigger issue. No idea what's going on but it makes the hats almost unplayable.

The other issue(s) are with the rest of the cymbals and edge vs bow detection. The 14 and 16 metal crashes have about a 10-20% mistrigger rate on detecting bow vs edge hits with the ED10. The indicator on the Edge control in the ED software will be consistent for a bit and then just freaks out and bounces all over the place for a string of hits, regardless of where or how hard I hit the cymbal. No amount of tweaking or using different presets has made it better. I hooked up a Roland CY16 crash to the ED10 and it does the same thing. Using the metal cymbals with the TD27 - issue disappears. It's even worse with the metal Zeitgeist ride - bow and bell work fine, but to get an edge to trigger on the ED10, I have to slam it as hard as I can in one specific spot. The china and splash are hopeless, with zero consistency at all. And again - no issues with any of the metal cymbals when connected to the TD27. They all trigger quite well with clean separation of edge and bow, even without tweaking the factory settings.

I'm at a serious loss here. I know metal cymbals aren't quite as good as rubber when it comes to triggering, but given that my Roland rubber cymbals are having the same problems with the ED10 and the metal cymbals are triggering great with the TD27, I don't think that's the issue. The Zeitgeist cymbals are a house brand from drum-tec, but the hihat controller is stamped 'GoEDrum' and the trigger boxes all look identical to the GED ones. So I'm pretty sure drum-tec is just doing house conversions on LV cymbals with GED parts. I've heard nothing but good things about the GED triggers so that shouldn't be the issue either. I also don't think it's a hardware issue with my ED10, given that the toms, kick and snare all work perfectly.

Sorry for the novel - thanks for reading. I have clients waiting on tracks, so need to get this figured out ASAP. Would really appreciate any help!

Let's start with the hihat controller. Can you try disabled the 'Auto Detect' setting for your hihat controller by clicking on the hihat pedal icon?

Also, I see that you are using version 2.3.1. Can you please confirm that you are running build 16. There was a serious issue with earlier builds (less than build 13) that could explain some of the behavior you are seeing.

Rob - thank you so much for your reply! Disabling 'Auto Detect' solved the hihat issue immediately. I'm thrilled - the controller is working flawlessly now. And I am indeed on Build 13 of 2.3.1. Can you direct me to the best version for me to grab, and let me know how to properly save/import settings if applicable? Would love to keep the progress I've made, I've got the snare, toms, etc. just how I want them. Thank you so much - you're a lifesaver!

Your device is set to 'Auto'Save' so your settings are already saved. The update will not affect you settings. You can get the latest version from the downloads page.

Here's a video about the preset manager.

So next up. Post a screenshot of your cymbals so I can have a look.

Fantastic - thank you. I now have Build 16 and can already tell that it's definitely an improvement. Not perfect, but I'm willing to chalk up the mistriggers to just being metal cymbals and needing to fine-tune things a bit more (including my playing). Thank you so much Rob - I'll chime back in if I have any more questions or issues. Really appreciate the help!
