Hello all. I’ll try and keep this brief, but first a little backstory. I started playing drums in 6th grade at school. Played into college and had a partial scholarship. That was about 20 years ago. I haven’t played drums a lot in the last decade. Life and I also play guitar and was doing more of that. I also do some recording and have lots of experience there.
So I’ve decided I want to get an electric kit and get back into playing more and do some recording. And I like the idea of using an ekit to trigger a vst. So while looking into that, I had found the edrumin products. The 10 looked perfect. But as is well known availability can be a problem. And I missed the recent batch. But I found a used one. It should be here in a couple of days.
However aside from some sticks and a throne, I don’t have anything else. So what is some of the preferred best performing pads and cymbals to get? First thing to mention is these will be left in an metal shop building with no a/c. And I’m in Oklahoma. It’s about to get warm. So I don’t want anything with wood shells. But I do want something that feels good and triggers well. I want positional sensing. It’s pretty much a must on the snare and highly desired on the hi hat and ride. Toms and crashes are less important.
I have played some electronic kits before. But it was ages ago. So I realize things may not feel exactly the same as an acoustic, and I can deal with that, but the closer the better. The triggering is the issue I remember the older ones having. Ghost triggers and not triggering sometimes. I’ve watched the videos and that’s part of what I like about the edrumin. I should be able to dial that in. I’m also leery of hot spots on the snare. Something that can also be dialed in from the videos I’ve seen. But I’ve also seen a lot of drums now have multiple sensors place around the drum to help eliminate that.
Basically I want to get really solid stuff. But it doesn’t have to be the best. If something is 95% as good and can be dialed in and is quite a bit less expensive, I wouldn’t mind saving a little. With the snare probably being the exception. I’ll pay more for something that is just better. Easier. More consistent. More reliable. Same with the hi-hat.
New or used. I’m not too picky there. Before getting this, I had considered efnote 3x kit or the atv exs-5 kit. I really like the efnote hi-hat from what I’ve seen. But not sure it will work. It seems to have multipin connector. If there’s a way to modify it to work with the edrumin, I’m handy with a soldering iron.
Anyway before I keep going. Let me know. And thanks in advance.
What to use with edrumin 10??
Re: What to use with edrumin 10??
Wow, that's pretty much the same situation I'm in (except for having an edrumin10 - I'm still looking). I'm also eying the efnote 3x, ATV or maybe one of the drum-tec lines, so are really looking forward to you getting some replies here .
Re: What to use with edrumin 10??
wood shell shouldn't be a problem.
They are thin plies of dry wood that are layered with glue. There's no green wood in there, so they shouldn't be affected too much by high heat.
I was going to mention the old Yamaha rubber pads, but they won't give you positional sensing.
So, you could do like I did. Get an old kit you can get cheap enough, saw the toms in half, so, double the toms, add side triggers, either commercial or plain simple small tower mounted on a L bracket screwed into a lug. Add a good mesh on top. Adjust all with the eDRUMin app.
