PC LATENCY?

Post by ddropski »

Hi everyone,

I was watching some youtube reviews on the ED10 and the person who gave the review ( I don't remember who it was) said that he noticed significant lag problems using a PC.. this worries me because I have a PC I will be using and I'm expecting to see my ED10's coming very soon as they are in local customs

so my question is this going to be a problem or if it was a problem has it been addressed? or is there a workaround? I have an intel 9800k processor and 32 Gb Ram. I also use protools. ( if it means anything I have had the MD and that seemed to work ok)

is anyone using a P.C. and they experiencing problems? please let me know I'm kinda on the edge of my seat.

You will need an audio interface, there’s no way around that, even with 32gb ram….

If a reviewer stated the eDRUMin is the source of latency that would be incorrect. The eDRUMin sends MIDI data to the computer via USB (the most common method). There are many users of eDRUMin on both Mac and Windows that has no issues with MIDI. In fact some have tested this and the eDRUMin can go head to head with Roland, and Roland is known for excellent latency.

An audio interface takes the “workload” off of the computer and is done externally within the audio interface. So imagine the audio interface is an external sound card, and Windows will use the external sound card instead of the internal sound card. Windows is known to be the main source of latency. Windows audio driver is just not that good. You can search YouTube or other forums and form your own opinion on the free ASIO driver for Windows. Some reviewers will say they can get by with ASIO and Windows, but I think you’ll find most recommend an audio interface. Mac has a better audio driver called CoreAudio. So whether an audio interface is needed or not is debatable. I started out with CoreAudio and no audio interface, and I went to a Focuriste Scarlett audio interface. My novice ears did not hear a difference in latency. I suspect the same can not be said if I had a Windows device.

As another poster stated. Excellent RAM, CPU, hard disk space for Windows does not translate to good latency. The issue is with the audio driver, not the hardware.

^^^^ what he said!

Windows audio drivers suck for real time audio. Buy an audio interface and never look back.

so the way i was running my system before was my MD into the computer via USB but the audio was being processed by my Avid Elevenrack and that runs the protools audio portion .. I would never dream of thinking I can run it from my OEM onboard soundcard. so if I understand correctly you're saying there is no problem with the way Edrumin works with P.C. USB that's great news .. and puts my mind a little more at ease if I understood that correctly

here is the eleven rack if you're not familiar

Looks good to me. That box is an audio interface with a guitar focus, but that doesn’t matter for this application. Should work good.
