HH drop clutch simulation

Would it be possible to have a "simulate drop clutch" feature with the module? Say being able to link a footswitch/sustain switch to the HH pedal, so that when the footswitch is pressed the HH pedal will be "locked" to a configurable value, and when the HH pedal is pressed again will automatically re-engage and behave like a normal HH again?

This would be really useful when playing metal without having to buy a physical drop clutch (which might or might not work with the VH cymbal) and likely also better as one would be able to fine tune the HH openness value as needed. Normally drop clutches are activated by the sticks, but this way it would be even easier as going from HH to left foot pedal one could just press the footswitch on the way without having to hit anything with one's hands.

Ooh, nice idea.

There's a workaround like the snare throw off switch, where you press a switch/foot pedal to toggle the note bank for the input. Set it to a note as an x-drum with the closed hat articulation loaded.

not sure if that would work for the HH though, given that the HH open/close CC would likely still be sent even switching banks... I think the only way for this to work is for the module to support it by sending a customizable CC value when activated by the footswitch (and obv go back to normal as soon as you step on the actual HH pedal)

Just assign a fixed HH position midi note to a second bank. Then, it bypasses the CC messages.
In any way, once you activate the drop clutch, you don't use the HH pedal anymore, but are on the second kick drum pedal, right?

correct, this means though that, unlike a drop clutch, you also have to remember to hit it on the way back when you do plan to use the HH again. I thought that when you "link" the HH pedal to the pad, it would always be linked, so that if you step off it it would send CC=127 (or 0 whichever it is) on hits always. Or you mean I should pick one of the specific HH notes superior uses for one of the "hh semi-closed" articulations in the other bank? I guess doing that should work, I'll try, although I still think it should be doable (and cooler) to have it as a module functionality...

yes.

I agree with perceval's advice. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Hi, I just posted this to the VDrums Forum the other day.

Drop Clutch - Lock Hi-Hat closed
04-18-21, 04:22 PM
My TD-20X has this as a toggle function using a non-locking footswitch. However, I don't think this is available on many of the newer modules.

It just occurred to me, and don't recall seeing this mentioned before, that it is easy to implement a Drop Clutch on any module using a Locking Switch in parallel with any Hi-Hat Controller, whether pedal or top-of-stand.

I have been doing this forever, on my second Hi-Hat connected to TMC-6 using a FS-5L, but I just thought this might be of interest to many people who may want to lock the Hi-Hat closed while playing Double Bass Drums / Double Pedal.

What you need:
A Mono Splitter Cable such as Hosa YPP-111 or
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A Locking Switch such as FS-5L, FS-6 set to the Lock position, etc..
You could even do this with a simple DIY project using a locking toggle switch.

Connect the splitter cable between the module and the Hi-Hat Controller or Hi-Hat Pedal and connect Hi-Hat Controller or Hi-Hat Pedal to one leg and the Locking Switch to the other.

If using FS-5L, you'll want to set the lamp to come on when the switch is closed, to indicate the Hi-Hat is locked closed.

Basically, the Hi-Hat Controller is a Variable Resistor with Zero Ohms resistance in the closed position, so the short circuit of the closed switch in parallel with the Hi-Hat Controller emulates the closed hi-hat pedal.

For a DIY project, you could add an in-line resistor (maybe 10kOhm, but I need to confirm), if you wanted to have the locked closed hi-hat in the half-closed position.
Even using a two position toggle switch, open, one position to a resistance and the other to a full short circuit.

HTH

I confirmed this works with Hosa YPP-111 or YPP 106 cable and FS-5L on my TD-20X with VH-11 or FD-8.

Sorry to re-activate an old thread but would you or someone else be able to explain in simple terms how to do this? I was in the Pedal adjustment section for the hihat and clicked on the second Note bank and adjusted it to be closed but then when I click on the original one it's also changed and I don't see the Independent button in the manual. I was looking to have a drop-clutch setting for when my daughter practises as she hasn't yet got the hang of keeping it shut witht the pedal and potentially for in the future if I get a double-pedal. I have a F5U I was hoping I could use to switch between the settings.
