If the audio interface is being used as an output only but not doing anything special, why use one over the headphone jack on a laptop/PC? Just trying to understand the advantage.

It's obvious that it would be useful for a PA, if I was planning to use one occasionally. I definitely won't be connecting it to an AV amplifier though.

Just call the Audio Interface "external Sound card", because in this case that`s what it is. it lowers latency and improves quality (in most cases). But you can do without, to try, but latency will be to high with a onboard soundcard.

Think of it like this. Your headphones out is a "windows" interface, and therefore it's running through all kinds of Windows background operations.

Your ASIO is purely just to get audio in and out from your interface to music software.

ASIO is faster, and better quality.

I'm running a Zoom U24, set to 24bit 48khz, 64 buffers, and the latency is 1.5ms (software alone, so adding in drum module latency of 2-4ms, that's just over 5ms).

BUT ALSO!

with my interface I have 4 mono audio channels going out. 2 get sent to the PA for the fun stuff and I have 2 spare channels, which are going into a little active speaker sitting inside the kick shell. So now the drummer doesn't need to worry so much about what the mixing desk is doing or IEM problems. That little auxiliary sound is a good substitute for an acoustic sound.
