Just to follow up, I trialled an optical pedal-mounted controller (Drone) - and its god awful!

Worst bit of kit I've ever bought. Essentially unusable.

Calibration has very narrow range, any tiny pedal movement is grossly over interpreted and the psychological disconnect from the 'thing I want to emulate making the sound' being seen moving on the top of the stand, actually being on the bottom, is very uncomfortable and presents a weird unnatural abstraction.

Made me appreciate my Goedrum GHC much more though! Spent a bit more dialling it in and ensuring it is stable under the dual metal hats.
So, I need to update this and make an apology to Mr Drone. I decided to spend some time with this again, after reading many positive reviews.

First, same results. Completely unusable. Mainly due to every time I hit an open hat, the pedal would bounce a little and register a pedal close note. No amount of calibration, or curve could fix it.
So I almost gave up, confused why people liked it.

Then, I remembered reading someone bent the white plate up to create more space from the sensor. Recalibrated, and its amazing!

Everything works flawlessly. All the subtle nuances of acoustic hi hat playing are there. I can finally just forget about tinkering and just play...

So, do persevere. When it's right, its much better than a stand mounted design (VH11 etc) IMO

Glad you got it working for you. I don't recall having to bend or twist anything, but giving the device enough "wiggle room" is essential. Some hihat pedals allow for angle adjustments too, something to look into.
