Having trouble with ghost notes and pd-125
Having trouble with ghost notes and pd-125
I'm having some difficulty with the snare drum (PD-125). I can't seem to get low velocity ghost notes and the low vels trigger a cross stick each time. I played around quite a bit with the 3-zone adjustment and the threshold. I can only get it so that the ghost notes trigger the snare ONLY but then it's insensitive to x-stick. I can't really get a good quite roll or pressed roll or shuffle (Purdie style) ghost notes in there.
I used the PD-125BK preset. Not sure if that's the right one as my Snare only says "PD-125" (no BK).
Also - the side of off center zones of the mesh head trigger x-stick too... any suggestions? Screenshot attached.
Also, what is the best way to save my entire bank for backup? Do I have to export each pad preset individually?
Thanks.
Re: Having trouble with ghost notes and pd-125
I have a PD-125 as well (the BK is just a color code, mine is the WT) and I have no issues getting ghost notes. Just looking at your screenshot, I would start by making the Scan time longer (until where it dips after those first three peaks) and definitely make the Hold a lot longer (10 to 15ms).
As for the edge of the head triggering rim hits, I've noticed that too and posted about it. This may or may not be PD-125 specific, but one thing you can do is adjust the Rimshot Range control by making the left (olive green) box a lot narrower. That's basically where the cutoff between head and rim happens and it can be very finicky.
Below is a screenshot with my settings. I've also attached a preset if you want to try that out.

Mek,
The issue with your setting is that your GAIN is far too high, and your HOLD is far too low. After you sort those out, then you'll want to take a look at your RIMSHOT RANGE control.

Ok thanks a lot. I will try it out when back in the studio tomorrow!
Re: Having trouble with ghost notes and pd-125
I see this a fair amount - that users are setting gain too high. I find that for most of my devices a proper gain is very near the bottom of the slider. The gain has a lot of headroom. Would it make sense for you to re-scale the slider so that most devices' gain levels would fall near the middle of the slider range so it's more intuitive. Just a thought.
Re: Having trouble with ghost notes and pd-125
No, I don't think it would. Yamaha pads the need the gain almost at max. Furthermore that slider is controlling a digital potentiometer, so i can't mess with it too much. Perhaps having the velocity curve turned on by default would be a better idea.

Thanks a lot for that! It works much better now with those settings, although I'm still really not able to get the most sensitive, repetitive notes, like a pressed roll at low dynamics... a crosstick still comes out. maybe it's just the pd-125 though?monospace wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 4:04 pmI have a PD-125 as well (the BK is just a color code, mine is the WT) and I have no issues getting ghost notes. Re: Having trouble with ghost notes and pd-125
I see - I thought gain was just multiplying the output vel for the plugin. I didn't know inter-related with the other settings.
EDIT : Ahhh I see it's the input gain - that makes sense now... thanks!
